Nexus 6P bootloader e-fuse remembers if hardware was ever unlocked | Pocketnow

nexus-6p-fuse.jpg

When unlocking the bootloader for the first time, the phone reportedly marks an area of one-time programmable memory with a flag that indicates the hardware’s been unlocked. The presence of this “electronic fuse” is visible above in the Qfuse section of the Nexus 6P’s fastboot menu.

And much like a physical fuse, once that e-fuse is blown, it’s blown for good: no matter what you do, restoring factory images and re-locking the bootloader, the Nexus 6P’s going to remember that it was previously unlocked.

Permanently bricking your phone? I'll never buy a Nexus 6P then :manny:

It being in place at all is a cause of concern for me. The typical protection excuses are bullshyt because you have to deliberately know what you're doing to even flip that switch. Not to mention at one point Nexus phones were for this kind of stuff. It's not like Apple where a big benefit of Jailbreaking is piracy. Doesn't really make sense with the the info that's currently out.

Phones have had this on and off for years. I think Motorola did it first in their droid line years ago...hackers of course found a way around it

But it's not saying that a adverse action happens, besides the phone remembering that it's unlocked, nothing happens

Idk why they used the word fuse

They tried to tacitly suggest that it was a bad thing.

I personally think there is nothing wrong with this. I've been an embedded software engineer for quite some time and it is paramount that we keep track of whether the bootloader has ever been flashed or tampered with.

I understand that, I'm just always cynical when stuff like this comes up. It won't (or shouldn't) make a difference from the rooting and rom'ming standpoint.
