$9 on top of the $15 NJ drivers already have to pay to come across the Hudson

1/62
@typesfaster
Mind-blowing how effective congestion pricing is. Lower Manhattan streets remain completely empty. It's an important lesson to remember: how price-conscious the typical consumer is - a daily $9 fee changed the entire landscape of NYC. Lower Manhattan is going to really boom now with all the honking and congestion cleared out.

2/62
@typesfaster
This street was never empty pre Jan 5

4/62
@imjaredz
What is going to boom about Lower Manhattan now that all the people are gone? Congestion may be effective, but not in the way you want.

5/62
@typesfaster
More people will want to live here, more restaurants + businesses will open, more new buildings will be built. NYC is the most walkable place in the country but the experience was brutal because of the cars, traffic, honking, air pollution, etc.

7/62
@Girlaboutsmthng
I’m curious if traffic is worse uptown now

8/62
@typesfaster
I haven't been able to figure that out.

9/62
@kevinakwok
Now let’s do it for parking

10/62
@typesfaster
Parking lots or parking spots?

11/62
@SeedOilScout
We might need to come back to see this for ourselves

12/62
@typesfaster
I'll let you know if it holds up when it's not 30 degrees

13/62
@SimplyDionysus
Central London still crowded with congestion pricing.

14/62
@typesfaster
Traffic in London doesn't seem as bad as NYC to me.

15/62
@DislikeClicker
I’m sorry is this a joke? Isn’t it just 9 bucks???

16/62
@typesfaster
$22-40 to come through the tunnel depending on whether you have a car/small truck/big truck, and whether you have EZ pass setup.

$9 to enter the city via bridges and other routes, or just to drive into the congestion zone.

Shocked me also.

17/62
@DevDemi1
No it’s not effective if you’ve just denied access to most ppl. That’s actually a failure.

18/62
@typesfaster

GhM9ASKXIAAOYLA.png

19/62
@AndrewG29922648
For NYC I am shock that $9 made that much difference. Many Houston commutes are at least that BOTH ways daily on toll rds and it makes almost 0 difference.

20/62
@typesfaster
tbf it's now $22-$40 to come through the Holland Tunnel depending on your car situation.

21/62
@mrsmolescroft
Is this not affecting businesses in a negative way?

22/62
@typesfaster
Too early to tell. Definitely can't be good for the parking lot businesses lol.

Subway, railroad, busses have way more people on them now.

I bet people not wanting to spend $9 to drive aren't big spenders at downtown businesses tho.

23/62
@mecee
How long will you allow yourself before you change your central planning perspective should the data suggest your hypothesis here is wrong?

24/62
@typesfaster
Do any cities that implemented congestion pricing regret it?

25/62
@Rondo2
The Law of Unintended Consequences is going to hit people like you like a sledgehammer.

26/62
@typesfaster
How has congestion affected Stockholm/London/Singapore?

27/62
@rohanvisme
The noise pollution was crazy in NYC, so one part of me is excited to visit this version of the city -- but something looks very off about these empty streets in NYC.

I hope they're tracking the effect this has on local businesses, because I suspect there will be effects they didn't predict.

28/62
@2sunsky
Ya, it’s incredible downtown. A noticeable improvement.

Bravo! @GovKathyHochul 👏👏

THANK YOU!

Also, don’t tell anyone but I’ve driven 5 times within the zone (short distances) & haven’t been charged. I think if you cut in on two-way E/W streets you get tagged… in between, (only downtown) not as much.👌

29/62
@thechrisbuskirk
Wow. Does this exceed expectations? And what’s their workaround I wonder

30/62
@_TomHoward
Something doesnt add up. No way does 1x $9 fee scare off this many drivers. Thats how much a NYC coffee is.

31/62
@SportstechSuraj
Hopefully nyc will start appropriating a larger chunk of their budget to renovate subway infrastructure

32/62
@JohnForrester
They did the same thing in Tokyo and man is it quiet.

33/62
@alexandretakacs
I'd say too soon to tell.

Give it 6-12 months to pass judgment

34/62
@MCKid79662742
Why haven’t Lyft and Uber fares decreased noticeably, even though traffic has significantly improved since the rollout of congestion pricing?

How is it that a 30-minute ride within the city can still cost as much as a round-trip flight between major regional airports in the U.S.?

35/62
@alexpotato
Even commuting out of NYC has changed:

The helix coming out of NYC was the emptiest I’ve ever seen it at 6pm on a Monday.

It almost looked like the lockdown days.

36/62
@highyielddrama
The lesson is that when you give away something for free, the resource allocation is inefficient and creates too much demand for the supply — in this case, traffic congestion. Now those who value the area most (as measured by their willingness to pay) will be the ones using it, not literal free riders.

37/62
@AdamBomb1776
The fact there’s no pedestrian traffic to be seen kinda proves your theory wrong genius… for a “walkable city” no one seem to be walking around which means those businesses will crater.

Ever wonder why they’re not talking about how “lower Manhattan is booming” as you said it would be… because it can’t if there’s no traffic.🙄🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

38/62
@DiggingInTheDi1
I'd wager the lost foot traffic to businesses, and subsequent tax revenue thereof possibly offsets any gains made by this.

39/62
@DeanDude33
How about we wait for the cell phone usage data like they used to run for cities during Covid restrictions. That will tell us how many people are active in the city rather than looking at photos of roads

40/62
@CarlBranco
I'm looking forward to NJ implementing the same on drivers entering NJ from NY.

41/62
@Coach_Crash
With no one but New Yorkers there to buy stuff with what money? NYC is about to find out just how self-sustaining a huge metropolis is, which is not.

42/62
@keith_dorschner
Did the people take public transport and rub elbows with criminals?

Most likely they just stayed home and if they are at home, they aren’t spending money at Manhattan parking decks and restaurants and stores.

If this continues, the fee will be reduced further.

43/62
@typesfaster
Varick in this spot has always been one of the most highly trafficked streets in the entire city.

44/62
@NaithanJones
“Effective” in what way? The tradeoff is that the economy of lower Manhattan was just destroyed

45/62
@CircaDiem
“Price-conscious” is just a nice way of saying income inequality is expanding at an astronomical rate.

46/62
@software25939
Yeah really gonna boom now that no one is there. Liberal logic.

47/62
@Helen4NY
Or DEAD.

Reigning in crimes and family-orientated safety on subways, parks, and streets will be the REAL motivators for New York City.

I am running for City Council D1 against crime and drug lord Christopher Marte this year! Please help me reach $5000 matching fund threshold by March 15th! You will be the first donation! Contribute

48/62
@horizontalescal
Economists will tell you, "free" is a very special price that severely distorts the market. Going from 0 to even like 50 cents would have made a bigger difference than you'd think

49/62
@Opportunitweet
This has to be a joke.

50/62
@toconnor66
Tell that to the retail and F&B with zero foot traffic. Enjoy your microwaved dinner 🤡

51/62
@longevitypalace
I actually landed in New York yesterday and was wondering why it was so empty. I thought it was because at the beginning of the year and no one was traveling after the holidays.

52/62
@chooserich
It's not congestion pricing...

It's 20 degrees out and we all went to Miami. Hi from Miami!

53/62
@QuietOurStreets
What a shame for the vulnerable and NON able-bodied!

54/62
@typesfaster
Disabled don't have to pay the congestion tax.

55/62
@basketballerre1
It’s awful. Basically the rich get to drive while the people already struggling can’t. Classic pay for play. Gross

56/62
@typesfaster
Agree they should charge people who make more twice as much or something.

57/62
@SubmarinerFarm
Lol, effective at pushing people onto mass transit, where they can be pushed onto the tracks, or just set on fire.

58/62
@typesfaster
They have to combine congestion pricing with cleaning up the subway and jailing criminals.

59/62
@CeresXVII
For anybody wondering, this street is the Jersey-bound entrance to the Holland tunnel. Picture likely taken from 565 Broome

GhTkPzbXsAAvN4M.jpg

60/62
@PaineCommonSens
Great! Imagine all the small retail businesses that will suffer!

61/62
@SmileyGnome
Just canceled our trip to NYC this spring. Going to check out Boston instead.

62/62
@rjmacarthy
Just goes to show how much value people place on convenience.

I’m not from NY but yeah no fukking way. $9 per day is nearly $5k per year, which is $50k gone after 10 years for doing nothing than your average commute.

That city can go fukk itself at that point. How about stop giving corrupt people more money, that’ll free some cash up.

@fawfulfan
The unspoken truth is that all the people whining about the $9 congestion toll were parking illegally to evade the $60.

They're mad because unlike meter maids, automated toll cameras don't look the other way on their counterfeit placards just because they're a "local."

[Quoted tweet]
$9 "through the nose"
$60 in parking "just how it is"

2/11
@fawfulfan
It's wild how differently turnstile jumpers are treated from illegal parkers. Both are bad and stealing from the city. But illegal parkers are arguably stealing more, but it's seen as not as big a deal.

3/11
@CutBackDavis69
Lol its 9 dollars per day thats 200 a month

4/11
@uncriticalsimon
I think a wheel clamp or a tow settles the issue.

NYC is the world's most eminent city. It's not like Newport or even Birmingham or London.

5/11
@AndrewZ60494543
Also explains why there was such a dramatic drop in traffic despite studies predicting that the toll “should” have to be over $20 to be that effective. Turns out illegal parkers are more price sensitive than people who actually pay for parking.

6/11
@neipate96
some of these people circled for 40 minutes for street parking, just people who never valued their time

7/11
@Brooklydamus
Overnight parking was illegal in the city until the 50s but gave up because the number of cars made enforcement impossible. Technology has allowed us to return to the original vision

8/11
@NYC_redeemer
A “local” or a cop / fireman with a get out of parking for free plaque?

9/11
@DavidRCampbell6
Many probably have free parking provided by their employers.

10/11
@CH66566077
Yep, the camera doesn't care about one's PBA card

11/11
@randomperson_FA
I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of them have never been told they have to follow rules.

Maybe empty streets are their goal i don't know but i think Ny probably should have stared at $3 and worked their way up instead of staring at 9 and going up

This gonna be a lesson on price elasticity of demand.

:wow:
£15 for Central London Plus £12.50 for Ulez
and still more traffic

NY must have wanted that money

They didn’t anticipate this , I’m sure:russ:

“Surely, New Yorkers can afford $9, right?”
“Sure, Bud. Go for it.”

well even if they could and did turn these areas into residential, the lack of congestion would be a selling point so i don't see how it would backfire in that regard.

New Yorkers, is there a ton of cab companies still around nowadays?
I've always wondered that.

I always wanted to be in NYC and flag a cab down like I see on TV.

I live in the middle of Illinois and we basically have no cabs.

There is this one small company. One of the cars is a black mid 90s Buick century with the company name on the side:mjlol:

It's amazing how many people keep posting "the streets are empty" in response to the congestion tolls –– both pro and con. (This person is pro-toll.)

The streets are empty because compared to a single person, cars are enormous!

@helplessdelta
the idea here being commerce actually happens in the middle of the street and not, y'know, *inside the businesses* where goods and services are exchanged for money.

[Quoted tweet]
Congestion pricing killing NYC businesses…noon today..

GhMvEAMW0AAnOcT.jpg

2/100
@mosb1000
It is so weird how these guys just flipped a switch from "it's a cash grab that won't help with traffic" to "it's killing the city because all the cars are gone" without any backlash at all. Shouldn't people be calling this out?

3/100
@helplessdelta
In the span of 10 days we've gone from: It'll never work > it's not working > it's too early to tell if it's working > it's working too well > gridlock traffic was good, actually.

Olympic-level mental gymnastics.

4/100
@violacesario_
Hey Derrick, how do people get to stores

5/100
@helplessdelta
if you squint there's actually a hint right in the center of the image.

The pro pricing folks are saying the opposite of the anti pricing folks. Truth be told, neither side knows what the outcome will be. It's a bold experiment.

8/100
@pjcboro
Deliberately misunderstanding that people have to actually get there with their money?

9/100
@Dangerbug
Its math. 10% less people means 10% less rev from those people

10/100
@joshuatheard
They drive on the street to get "inside the business"?

11/100
@fukkthor
Has anyone ever seen someone park at a store in Manhattan to shop?

12/100
@mtlavo
Right, or that every business in manhattan is a drive thru!

13/100
@SCLP1GP
Also, I’m not sure 100 people drive to a Manhattan coffee shop to curb park for a cappuccino daily… maybe cabbies lol.

14/100
@zing_reali
over a million people a day enter Manhattan, many shop while there, many drive cars, now there will be less, just like they want - a gated community where the servants come to change the sheets and fix the plumbing

15/100
@bluzoan
You never bought at that middle of the street popup shop in traffic? Sad

16/100
@woopdedoodahhh
It's awesome that the streets are empty. We can probably make them narrower now and let more people shop/eat/be entertained

17/100
@jeffthoimo
Boy, the stores in SF must be super busy

18/100
@AdamBomb1776
You do realize there’s a reason when you shop for a retail location “foot traffic” and “car traffic” are two of the most important metrics to loo for right???

19/100
@JohnMattiace
I’ve traveled extensively to secondary and tertiary American cities and being from NYC I was always struck by the way the streets and downtowns were eerily empty of traffic, even in the middle of a workweek. The energy, action, and power of that was palpably absent and among other things, causes one to just want to leave. The activists here seem to have successfully turned NYC into one of those towns.

20/100
@anon2176
How do you think those people get to the businesses? Maybe in the cars, Ubers, and taxis that used to be in the street?

21/100
@SevendersOTW
Lol

22/100
@BrickVersetti
I don’t think you have a idea of how much people are avoiding the zone

23/100
@despair
He says it’s noon but the clock in the background says 7am

24/100
@NastyNelf
Everyone seems to believe that cars are the only way people are getting around and they can't possibly be walking or using transit.

25/100
@BobaCyclist
Fact- and evidence-shy people love posting a photo and claiming “congestion pricing is killing businesses” by posting photos of roads.

26/100
@NaiZeni
Like do they know bikes and delivery services exist?

27/100
@PaulKrikler
Looks like all those lanes aren't needed for cars any more. So many better ways that space could be used to benefit *so* many more people than currently.

28/100
@cramersCoke
Bro posted a pic of less congestion on Herald fcking Square and says that commerce is dead. What a grift. This is the most transit rich 2 block-radius in the world.

29/100
@Conortmccartne1
Its wild to not see gridlock and people think that's a bad thing

30/100
@CrixusEsq
I'm actually shocked people are avoiding the zone this much.

Derrick, if they ain't in the street, they aren't going into stores. I used to go to B&H in this area and haggle all the time, but between taxes, parking and now this, I cant expect them to make it up.

31/100
@YokohamaRides
Carbrains think cars are more human than people so they look at this picture and think it looks like a ghost town.

32/100
@ImSpartacus18
People prefer to drive. Get over it.

I wouldn't expect an equirt advocate to understand how traffic and business work.

36/100
@elsalomebarojas
What an absolutely stupid fukking take.

37/100
@LibertyAngelo
Do the people teleport into the store Derrick?

38/100
@venividimessui
Looking forward to 6 months from now when you blame businesses shutting down on racism

39/100
@EverIntrigued
Biker bro transplants with no sense of logic and economics have caused an artificial covid like situation below 60th Street. The woke mind virus & cult ideologies are preventing them from understanding how they have killed businesses that barely survived in the post covid era.

40/100
@LoganTeix
The point is less people are finding excuses to go spend money in the city, leaving only the people who use the city to live and work rather than leisure.

41/100
@abstrusely
Oh nice, Derrick is retarded.

42/100
@BhagsNStonks
@disco___cat Americans some get it like this one. Many don't 🤣
Yeah business isn't booming because cars aren't driving past. Where they cannot even park lololol. Be so cool to see this in Melbourne

43/100
@rjjohnson2
I'll bet the parking businesses are thrilled.

44/100
@kyle_ferriter
Commerce could happen in the street if the city legalized dining stalls and popup vendor stands to reclaim some of that public space for productive purposes.

45/100
@Terpin8or
if the people aren't driving there, walking there, and not physically there - no commerce is happening there.

46/100
@NerdPaulNYC
That looks amazing, also the number of people on the street is pretty normal for non-lunch hours.

47/100
@This_is_ILL_
I mean I don’t see many people on the sidewalks either

48/100

also it’s cold

@Rufusthedog66
No kidding. Klling businesses. Why...whoever could have foreseen such a thing.

@HedonismBot17
Is it possible that congestion pricing could affect businesses in the area negatively? Is it a possibility?

70/100
@audacityofagay
these people forget 8 million people live IN the city. manhattan doesn't need the car traffic for their businesses to make money

71/100
@SPHdeORD
Derrick, please rethink your position after realizing that getting to the store is a precondition for commerce.

72/100
@Pedrubes
@VendorPower lol

@CanvasEmpty
As I’ve been saying over and over it’s cold AF and January. Adding the congestion price during the lowest period of people being outside on the east coast makes it seem

74/100
@mikey_nunchucks
They have to like, get to the store

75/100
@AtlPeachtreeGa1
This is going to be a terrific experiment. In a year, the nation can gauge if successful or not.

76/100
@SynTTSNews
I think we need to post links to that scene in Over the Hedge where they mention how the massive SUV usually only sits one person. Maybe that will help people realize that less cars doesn't mean abandonment of cities.

77/100
@Wilcoxjd45209
So, a month from now and if sales - esp at smaller businesses - have fallen, will you then admit there’s a problem?

78/100
@lnsane_dude
Well, some business happens in the street.

79/100
@FactsFactsFact1
Do you see a lot of ppl on the street though?

80/100
@GoneIn59Seconds
public transit is disgusting, unsafe, and too slow.

public transit will not improve because there are less cars.

just remember, people like derrick are not pro-transit they are anti-private vehicles.

p.s. make sure every bike lane that you see you walk in the middle of it

81/100
@JohnGonzales_19
Please don’t interact with these blue checkmark accounts, your interactions will only earn them a paycheck

82/100
@Burback34
And why do you think these stores are conveniently located right off the road and not underground by the subways, y’know where everyone is now.. 🙄

83/100
@KCAM22x
You can support congestion pricing without saying ridiculous things like this

84/100
@partners_road
Perhaps the most moronic post on Twitter so far in 2025. Setting a very high bar.

85/100
@hereforthecom19
guess what stops people from shopping ? f'ing gridlock.

86/100
@sparky0268_c
But we're hardly seeing hordes of people walking on these streets to spend the money inside these business premises either, are we...

87/100
@DoctorPep117
Believe it or not there were people in the cars, and those people would go to high traffic areas and spend their money

88/100
@palimonykid2006
So the simple question is how many people are in the store? Does anybody know that? How much are they spending? This other shyt is meaningless. You can buy online.The sales numbers are what? What’s the bottom line in the past 9 days? Then you can put 2 and 2 together.

89/100
@CaSoccerProject
You just got San Francisco'd

90/100
@Notonenot2
No cars coming in = no business

91/100
@KKOK132235
I'll ask again, are the people still coming into town and leaving their cars out, or are they just not coming into town.
In which case NYC is finished.

92/100
@ReptilianLvl94
You're not truly American until you convince yourself that land votes and that cars consume goods and services.

93/100
@AntsAmateursNyc
Riddle me this Batman how are they going to repay the 15 billion dollar loan that they took out. They thought congestion pricing tolls would repay the loan... If no cars are on the street no tolls are being paid..

94/100
@richardxchen
Macys is on the verge of bankruptcy.
Let’s make retail shopping even more inconvenient and expensive than online shopping.
Who’s going to spend a ton of money shopping & then take MTA?
Say goodbye to the Macys Thanksgiving parade.
One less attraction for tourists to come see.

95/100
@Ruben_NYC
WOW that looks like they killing the city. Well at least there is less parking tickets, towed cars, and quotas to fill.

96/100
@toddeat
no, it's worse. this is petroleum reverence. four wheeled motor vehicle traffic is sacrament. humans must supplicate themselves to the burning of fossil fuels. "business", in this cult's usage, does not mean *local* employment or trade or benefit at all.

97/100
@PifDe83362
Lockdown easd congestion and everyone got to stay home with their families - let's do it again.

That's the level of argument here.

98/100
@BatemanGilliam
How do the goods get to the store and the seevices get to your home?

99/100
@Freiheit20001
Pedestrian space should be expanded immediately, car lanes reduced.

100/100
@WearyOfChaos
Is that English?

I've heard people in upper management say this multiple times and some people don't wanna hear this but this is where we at.

I just met with a client in office Monday morning :snoop: This company was trying to sell us some software. I thought it was their HQ but after a while I realized they just rented the space. They all worked remote 100%

Their engineer was dressed like shyt, fit was baggy, wrinkly blazer, white tee showing under the collar shirt :hhh:

Said he lives in Alabama and flew in just for this. He probably making bank too :sadcam:

@growing_daniel
Did congestion pricing kill New York City? This seems not obviously good

[Quoted tweet]
This street was never empty pre Jan 5

@pourteaux
daniel you’re totally wrong- it’s easier to get around making the city more livable and meanwhile the businesses, restaurants, and bodegas are as busy as ever. only 15% of commuters use cars.

@pourteaux
i’m just getting out of dinner, let’s check on the streets!
