I don't see the darkened image as trying to downplay his European features and to thus somehow make him look ethnically black.
The darker image works, but not in some type of Time magazine O.J. darkening, but by making the overall image more foreboding and sinister, like the spectre of evil and death is approaching.
Lightening the image would lessen its effectiveness. The Grim Reaper wouldn't be half as effective as a symbol of dread if he were depicted in images walking around dressed like Moon Knight.
