Kulak - Wikipedia

Kulak (/ˈkuːlæk/; Russian: кула́к, tr. kulak, IPA: [kʊˈlak] ( listen), plural кулаки́, "fist", by extension "tight-fisted"; kurkuli in Ukraine, but also used in Russian texts in Ukrainian contexts), or golchomags (Azerbaijani: qolçomaq, plural qolçomaqlar) was the term describing peasants with over 8 acres (3.2 hectares) of land towards the end of the Russian Empire. In the early Soviet Union, particularly Soviet Russia and Azerbaijan, kulak became a vague reference to property ownership among peasants, who were considered "hesitating" allies of the revolution.[1] The kulaks were decimated following orders by Joseph Stalin, to guarantee collectivisation in the 1930s.

The word kulak originally referred to former peasants in the Russian Empire who became wealthier during the Stolypin reform from 1906 to 1914. During the Russian Revolution, the label of kulak was used to chastise peasants who withheld grain from the Bolsheviks.[2] According to political theories of Marxism–Leninism in the early 20th century, the kulaks were class enemies of the poorer peasants.[3] Vladimir Lenin described them as "bloodsuckers, vampires, plunderers of the people and profiteers, who fatten on famine",[4] declaring revolution against them to liberate poor peasants, farm laborers, and proletariat (the much smaller class of urban and industrial workers).[5]

During the first five-year plan, Stalin's all-out campaign to take ownership and organisation from the peasantry meant "peasants with a couple of cows or five or six acres [about 2 ha] more than their neighbors" were labeled kulaks.[6] Under dekulakization, government officials violently seized farms and killed resisters,[3][7] deported others to labor camps, and drove many to migrate to the cities[8] following the loss of their property to the collective.

I don't understand what the first part of your post has anything to do with the article. Unless you are trying to say that progressive supporters are fighting the same fight and should be encouraging each other rather than attacking which I agree with. Kulaks and Bolsheviks were fighting the same fight initially. They were fighting against imperialism and the upper class.

I've posted this before, but Americans don't know much about communism, so it's worth repeating whenever there is such a scare tactic like this one.

There is a growing communist nostalgia throughout the Eastern Europe.
Compared to the pensions, education and healthcare they have now, the citizens of ex-Soviet Union loved it:
Older residents in all 11 countries whose safety nets, such as guaranteed pensions and free healthcare, largely disappeared when the union dissolved are more likely to say the breakup harmed their countries.

Most Russians Prefer Return of Soviet Union and Socialism: Poll

A record 70 percent of Russians approve of Soviet leader Josef Stalin’s role in Russian history, according to a poll published by the independent Levada Center pollster on Tuesday.

Stalin’s image has been gradually rehabilitated in the 2000s from that of a bloody autocrat to an “outstanding leader.”
Stalin’s Approval Rating Among Russians Hits Record High – Poll - The Moscow Times

This is personal as well.
Not from Soviet Union, but ex-Yugoslavia, but I remember the abuse from the police my grandmother suffered when I was 6. Exhausted by all the legal battles over the expropriated land and all the abuse, she killed herself when I was 7.
Dictatorship was a horror.

But I also remember the benefits.
My mother was first in family to graduate from college and the healthcare system was much better than now. There was a greater security and safety and we had democracy at work.
The socialism part was great. I want it back in a democracy.

Every new global political movement started in the US, from reaganism and neoliberalism all the way back to marxism.
Marxism was possible because of all the articles Karl Marx wrote as a European correspondent for New York Daily Tribune for a decade.
Maybe it will not prevail in the US, but a new leftist movement will probably start in the US as well...

The Yay
op prolly just learned what a kulak was. whats next, gulag ? :pachaha: how about NEP ? :ohhh:

there are a lot of issues with socialist and communist nations, but people acting like we cant point out the good aspects ? education in those nations was always top-notch. where you think all these russian hackers are coming from ? women were given equal rights as soon as the revolution happened in ussr, before capitalist nations passed suffrage laws. more women entered the workforce and were treated equally in workplaces in socialist countries. part of reason why many countries went from farm-first nations to industry leaders. more women were doctors, physicists, astronauts, etc. in socialist countries than capitalist countries up until like the 70s or some shyt.

I encourage everyone to read the entire wiki

its important to understand the idealogy and how far down the rabbit whole it can go :ehh: this history is not taught in the US unless you actively pursue it. We are more told of what happened in Germany with Nazi's and hitler but this might be worse tbh.

Numbers executed[edit]
Stalin ordered that kulaks were "to be liquidated as a class"[25] and some historians suggest that this was the cause of the Soviet famine of 1932–1933.[26] This famine has complicated attempts to identify the number of deaths arising from the executions of kulaks. A wide range of death tolls has been suggested, from as many as six million suggested by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn,[27] whereas the much lower number of 700,000 deaths are estimated by Soviet sources.

According to data from Soviet archives, which were published only in 1990, 1,803,392 people were sent to labor colonies and camps in 1930 and 1931. Books based on these sources have said that 1,317,022 reached the destinations. The fate of the remaining 486,370 cannot be verified. Deportations on a smaller scale continued after 1931. The reported number of kulaks and their relatives who died in labor colonies from 1932–1940 was 389,521. Former kulaks and their families made up the majority of victims of the Great Purge of the late 1930s, with 669,929 arrested and 376,202 executed.[28]

you misunderstand me

When I imagine the 30s-40s I imagine that there are alot of violent people on different ends of the spectrum (Germans - Nazis, Russians - Communists, Italians - Fascists)

What the communists did and what they said was largely blacked out in the US (see communist books being confiscated and speakers arrested etc) whereas we have plenty of information about Hitler/Mussolini. When I read about the Kulaks and the great purge its horrible.

What they considered a "poisonous" class of people were identified as people with more than 2 cows and 8 acres of land :ohhh: that really isnt that much.

You have to understand you as an American know nothing about USSRs history. The two countries have been on an ideological war since before world war 2. Obviously, there's going to be american experts who will argue the oppression of Kulaks caused a famine killing millions of people. You are simplyfing a complex history in which scholars study and debate their whole lives. The bottom line is that both the far right and far left ideologies failed. Don't bring it up and compare that to the progressive democrats of today. This is just fear mongering from the conservative class in America to preserve and extend their riches.

riches can be construed in different ways depending on your disposition towards other people

the same categorizing is happening now, shunning history is a terrible idea.
