Southland actor voiced Batman in Batman: Year One.

FOX has found its young James Gordon.

Variety reports that Southland actor Ben McKenzie has won the lead role in FOX's Gotham series, which will focus on a pre-GCPD Commissioner Gordon and Gotham City in the years before Bruce Wayne became Batman.

The O.C.'s Ben McKenzie will play Det. Jim Gordon on Gotham.

McKenzie, 35, actually voiced the Dark Knight himself in the animated feature film version of Batman: Year One. He's best known for his roles as Officer Ben Sherman on Southland and as Ryan Atwood on The O.C.

Danny Cannon (Judge Dredd) will direct the Gotham pilot from a script by Bruno Heller. FOX has given the show a straight-to-series order. Young Bruce Wayne will be a recurring character on Gotham, which the rumor mill claims will see the likes of a pre-supervillain Penguin and Riddler make appearances on the Nolan-esque gritty origin show.

I don't think the show will be a train wreck, but I am disappointed that it takes place before Bruce Wayne became Batman.

But seriously Gordon in this show is gonna be way too young, batman will be a damn child when he meets him or young teen. How they gonna have any real villans when there's not gonna be a batman yet. The joker doesnt come until batman shows up. or two face or bane, or catwoman. the show is probably gonna be about the mob, the falcone family and the other one.

But it will be stupid anyone with a knowledge of comics and batman lore will know that gordon doesnt meet batman until he's mad old. if your gonna make this show about "young" james gordon then it probably wont even involve batman.

If it was on cw it would have gone 5 seasons at least, but being on a major network, it may just go 5 episodes
