"It includes special guest appearances by Bonnie Jo Mason, Redman, FC Barcelona soccer players and a unique tapestry of guest performers. The album was produced over a period of six years by Wu Tang producer Cilvaringz under the tutelage of The RZA."

I think most people are missing the point. Isn't this supposed be ART? Van Gogh, Picasso, Basquiat etc. Also, of course we wanna hear it, but there are plenty of rich collectors hoarding ART that we will never see. That's just part of the game. I salute this idea and I hope it works out.

The problem with this comparison is Wu-Tang didn't build their career off rich people. Pope Julius II didn't commission them to record this album.

They built it off regular people that don't have $5 mill laying around. So if you're telling me these guys came from poverty, built up a fan base over the last 20 years that literally put food on their table and made them rich and famous....and they're repaying us by dropping an album only rich people can listen to....rich people that, prior to Wu becoming pop culture trendy, couldn't give a fukk less about them....if that's what you're saying, then I gotta say this is hands down the biggest sell out move in rap history.

So I seriously doubt that's the case.

Most artists didn't start making art for rich people but they sure as hell jack up the prices once rich people come knocking. Supply and demand. That's like saying artists that performed in the park for free are selling out by charging $150 for tickets to their shows. It's not like wu is saying hey lets never make music for people that supported us from the jump. They simply came up with a scheme to milk some money from one of their rich fans. Plus, they are holding exhibitions for listening sessions anyway.

:what:

I'm gonna assume you don't know the history of this project, because your comparisons make no sense.

Rich people didn't come knocking. This album wasn't made for them, or this. It was made to be a regular Wu album, but they couldn't agree on simple shyt like distribution, who would get a cut of the profits, etc.

You need to understand Cilvaringz has dangled this project in the face of Wu fans for literally years, so to say :manny: "well guys, we sold it for $5 mill, art, blah blah blah" is disingenuous as hell after telling fans how much they'd love the album and it was all for them.

It's kind of deep, only this is real an not a comedy sketch. You have bands who give their new material away for free to their fans, and then you have Wu giving their material away to the rich. Not even claiming that 'the proceeds will go to such and such charity'. Then that quote above about folks in the industry encouraging this that @sporticus wrote, and the specification that it wasn't the rank and file or even peers but 'high ranking' industry people, meaning the mega-rich -- why would the mega-rich encourage this, and why would RZA feel pleased? It has a 'JayZ and Gwyneth' feel to it (which is better than an 'X accepting a ticket to Dubai' feel to it, but still).

What's the purpose of this stunt?

Ah. That's the backround? So why smite the fans -- the real fans -- like this?

Ah ok, I see your point. I didnt know there were actual plans to release this particular album and then they backtracked and decided to do this. I thought this was some scheme they've been cooking up for years as a way to come up on their rich fans and pull a publicity stunt at the same time, which seems to be working. I'm an old head and dont know shyt about Cilvaringz, nor do I care about him. I bought 36 chambers on release day and kinda dont give a fukk about a Wu album if RZA didn't produce it.

But they can listen to it through the tour they're doing. Everyone will be able to listen to the album, but you'll have to pay up for the exclusive experience. Some people have already said it, but it's for the dedicated fans. You've stated multiple times you wouldn't pay 40 bucks for it, but if there are fans willing to do so, why do you care? You're basically complaining they're not doing the album's release the way you want. I'm not sure I'd pay 40 bucks to listen to a Wu-Tang album once as well, but I won't complain about it either because it's their music, therefore it's their choice on how they want to release it, just as it is our choice to pay for it if we want to or ignore it if it's not to our liking.
