true dat, altho one can argue that this is just a mainstream version of popcaan style dancehall which was/is also an attempt at the hiphopification of dancehall.

Diplo as Major Lazer was basically taking early aughts dancehall to its logical extreme, harder, faster, more DANCEhall.

word. im not up on dancehall like that really. i only know the overdrive riddim and a couple of older classics. and i liked tommy lee and that gaza stuff kind of - but only because i could hear the US/mainstream influences in it. call that what you will but it is what it is.

anyway back to your post - couldn't it be argued that it all started with Vybez? didn't he mentor popcaan and kinda father that whole sound? (similar to say like yung LA and j-money fathering whats turned into the modern ATL sound). again im not up on dancehall like that so no slander if im wrong but isn't vybez the "don" here?

you're right it did start with vybez crew, the shawn storms and lisa hypes. I know i first heard it on a random black ryno track. I used popcaan cause he's the most prominent one of them. The vybez and the busy signals (beenie siegal) of the world were initially lyricists flowing on harder dancehall riddims, the youngins came and watered everything down to the point of Kenny Rogers covers becoming hits
