:leostare: Slavery in Brazil was just as racial as it was in the US. Not what drove slavery to grow. But in the deathroes and its aftermath even up til today.

:comeon: Who said it wasnt racial...do try to keep up...ill simplify it for you...Two large colonies had African slaves..one had a constitution one didnt ...

The one WITH the constitution stating "all men are equal" had a much harder time ending slavery and has way more racial tension to this very day.

Its counter intuitive but it makes sense.

:comeon: @ this dishonest paraphrasing...you literally take 3 words and drop the rest of the context....

He Opens with slavery existed BEFORE race ..it was only recently it became racial and it became that way because if you declare "all men are created equal" then you have to justify why some of those men are in chains

so to get around that blatantly visible hypocrisy they had to classify Negros as not fully human...its not that hard to understand

:wow: then you go ahead and make your own strawman....The example of Brazil is to juxtapose the difference..Brazil didnt have a constitution,it was a class and caste colonial heirachy so they had less problems ending slavery because the state did have a rule defining who was human and who wasnt

its really not that complex bruh.

No body is arguing whether which nation was able to end slavery the quickest.

The point of debate is Sowell's is dismissing the racialization of slavery in the United States due to US being democratic and Brazil being non-democratic.

It was a pointless deflection on his part. I know he says that the "all men are created equally" clause framed the hypocrisy of Trans-atlantic slavery but it doesn't remove the racialization of it.

Then what is sowell arguing here? Chasing his tail?

:ehh: Here is a better intellectual discussing race

Racial slavery arose in the Western Hemisphere long before "all men are created equal".. Race was "mixed in" with slavery in other colonial regimes just as much as it was in the Untied States. Ever heard of Code Noir? . Sowell doesn't understand history :heh:

The particular form of New World chattel slavery arose as a labor system due to the economic incentives of staple crop production, and race developed in ideological discourse informed by this particular reality and often was used to justify it. Perhaps the greatest driver of the development of the idea of race was the incentive to justify the values of the economic regime of brutality.

And that's just the first minute of the video. Who the fukk is this guy :mjlol:

Sam Harris is not an intellectual titan lol... Hes actually widely considered a joke now a days.

He's excellent at giving off the veneer of intelligence, but his blatant atheist agenda and lack of training in anything other than neuroscience forces him to generalize and ignore social and political structures as the impetus of human behavior.

I don't even think hes giving off the veneer anymore.

The man was feeling himself to the point where he stepped to a 90 plus year old Noam Chomsky; the worlds foremost public intellectual, and got his shyt handed to him like a mouthy Sophmore. Whats worse was he posted it publically like some groupie :mjlol:

I think race evolved to that point. I'm not sure if it was the driving force.

Maybe when Europeans first stepped onto the African continent they saw how much they technologically overmatched native Africans and that contributes to some sense of superiority. But I don't think racial superiority was the catalyst.

I think it grew out of the capitalist thirty for control. The feeling of racial superiority was a gift given by aristocraic white gentries to their poorer less sophisticated and easier to control white brethren

The one thing I will give you is that Harris attacks issues with reason and not through the veil of human emotions.

Yes, he lacks the input of social nuance, that doesn't take away anything from his points

:skip: and why is that?
When he started positing arguments like

"Would it be morally ethical to first strike nuke a Muslim country if they had a weapon? That would be unspeakable and awful but... We have to consider it..." And just innumerable dumb ass scenarios like that.
