Former NBA player DeShawn Stevenson, who last played for the Atlanta Hawks in 2013 recently gotten himself into trouble with American Express. Stevenson had an AMEX Black Card at one point, but never paid the bill and now owes the company $384,000.

AMEX to him to court and received a judgement against him to garnish his bank accounts to pay for the outstanding balance owed. Only one problem, they checked his Bank of America account and he only had $62.09 available, which AMEX garnished.



DeShawn Stevenson made over $28 Million in his NBA career, so it doesn’t mean that he is broke, he’s probably hiding the money elsewhere away from creditors.

If a person who makes 40-100k a year can find a way not to go broke and be set for 20-30 years of retirement, seems to me they have more knowledge of managing money than someone who made ten's to hundreds of millions of dollars and can't sustain themselves 3 years into retirement. most athletes aren't financially literate. they don't "work" for a living. they get paid millions to play sports. what's the point of learning how to manage money when they're getting $50,000 every game?.

you're talking about guys who barely graduated college. haven't had to budget in years. haven't worked in a professional career in the real world. aren't thinking about retirement. and feel the need to live it up on that playboy lifestyle. no wonder 90% of them are a few years after retiring. They can't sustain their $800,000 a year lifestyle anymore I'd wager the average professional clearing $50k or $60k has more understanding about money than an athlete. Nikkas are silly. They should be billionaires with all that money they got, instead they dead broke with nothing to show for it.

From the time he didn't pay his AMEX bill to the time they took him to court was months. He's tapped out and not able to pay his bills. He probably didn't realize he was unable to pay his AMEX bill until that one bill came around. He literally hit his fiscal ceiling. You have to pay AMEX every month. He was able to pay whatever he was charging in all the previous months so he knew the deal.
It's not going to be that long before a bank forecloses on his home, if he has one, or repo's his cars if they aren't paid off.

Of that 28 million, a percentage went to his agent and another percentage went to taxes. He was living a $28 million dollar lifestyle on a $16.8 million dollar income.
