Samsung bought 1 million copies of that album to be serviced as an app on it's new celebrated GALAXY S4 Phone...

Each album was paid for by Samsung at 5$ a pop..netting jay-z approximently 5 million dollars before the album has even gone retail...

This has been discussed already. From a sales standpoint this is no different than buying your own shyt in my opinion but from a business standpoint, on the surface, it's a pretty good deal.

wow....i could see somebody like Prince doing that..

artists like that shun traditional distribution methods and are intent on owning thier material .....

deals like this give them an autonomy not offered by the major labels

this was forseen years ago that commercial artists would seek "sponsors" to do business with in regards to the financing and marketing of thier art.

unfortunatly this seems to be of value ONLY to the global marquee acts such as the Prince, Madonna, U2's etc.

the bulk of the artists out thier will still seek the majors as thier best option for mass appeal in terms of distribution , unless they have enough confidence and leverage on thier part financially to "survive" independently like the Tech 9's etc.
