In terms of high profile mass shootings, they absolutely are almost always purchased legally. A friend of the San Bernadino shooter was charged federally for illegally making straw firearm purchases for Syed Farook, but they were all purchases legally. Lets run down the list of major shootings, I promise you this guys gun today was legal.
Pulse night club: legal as far as I know
Sandy Hook: legal
Aurora: legal
Virginia Tech: legal
I think a challenge would be finding a mass shooting, where the gun was purchased legally.
