San Jose City Council to sue MLB for refusing to let A’s move to San*Jose | SI Wire

The San Jose City Council has voted to sue MLB for refusing to let the Oakland A’s move to San Jose, reports ABC News’ Bay Area affiliate.

The A’s have faced problems with the Coliseum, its 47-year-old stadium shared with the Raiders, for years. On Sunday, a plumbing issue caused raw sewage to back up into the clubhouse — and not for the first time. A’s owner Lew Wolff wants to move to San Jose, and the city welcomes the team’s relocation. But the San Francisco Giants claim territorial rights and the office of Commissioner Bud Selig has refused to rule against the Giants.

The San Jose City Council says the city is losing $130 million because of the league’s stalled process in allowing the A’s to move to San Jose, and claims that the MLB has conspired to limit competition by controlling location of teams. Commissioner Bud Selig and the 30 teams that make up the league are named as defendants.

The attorney on the case, Joe Cotchett, explained the rationale behind the lawsuit. From the ABC News report:

“This is all about economics. And, you have a city like San Jose, the tenth largest city in the United States, cannot get a baseball club. I can name you other cities that are pulling for San Jose for the same reason. They want the right and the chance to bring a baseball team to their city, their county, whatever it might be.”
“Bud Selig appointed a commission to look at this very proposal that you just mentioned not one, not two, but four years ago. They’re still studying the situation,” Cotchett told ABC7 News.

Hope they win this. Selig is as dirty as they get.

How can the Giants claim territorial rights when the A's currently play right across the bay and this move would put them nearly an hour away? :what:

I was gonna post this but got busy here at work. Got for San Jo. That A's stadium, Cisco Field shoulda been opening the start of next mlb season. But the Giants, who the A's let have San Jose since they were thinking of moving there decades ago, are being hoes. The Giants have a Single A team in SJ and re being stingy. The Commissioners office has been investigating this for years, for what reason? Give them San Jose!

mlb also has a nasty lawsuit coming up that looks like they will probably lose regarding television rights and blackouts. could be an interesting few years between the ncaa and mlb suits. the landscape of sports could change

Nobody wants to be in Oakland. It's a slap in the face to the residents of Oakland. Wolf wouldn't stay in Oakland if the city offered to pay for the stadium.

San Jose/Silicon Valley is on the comeup
:lawd:

Stole the 49ers from San Francisco. I actually work down the street from the new stadium. Also gonna eventually get the A's to go along with the Sharks. Lets not forget the San Jose Earthquakes are building a new stadium next to the San Jose Intl. Airport over on Coleman.

As a sports fan I would much rather go to a new stadium, even if its in San Jose. The weather is better than in Oakland, less crime, more to do. Lets not forget BART is on its way down to San Jose and is easily accessible from everywhere. The Valley, hop on the ACE Train. SF, hop on CalTrain. East Bay, hop on BART. San Jose...VTA.

With the A's moving and the Warriors moving. That should be positive for Raider fans. It will give them room to build a new all football stadium. By 2020 I can see the bay having all new stadiums.

Look, i'm looking at this neutral, im a Indians and Steeler fan. I just like to go to games in great environments. You gotta be crazy to think oakland is going to build a new stadium for both the Raiders and A's individually. And thats what both teams want. Bring in the moving trucks yall...

I agree, but it's kinda obvious as to why...theres no money in oakland and will never be.

whereas SF and silicon valley been thriving lately

plus aint like oakland is a fun place to live/play if you arent a local. and richer areas like montclair are well hidden.
