And got nothing for it. Apparently the record was too big for Sting not to clear. Sting ain't some old starving artist. Dude is like UK music royalty so names like Puff Daddy and Biggie Smalls don't mean shyt to him.

Why seize the moment and rob yourself instead of fast track the clearance or pay a little more?
But he did get A LOT for it. That’s the thing. He just didn’t get the back end, but that song generated everything Puffy needed by helping push more copies of No Way Out, keeping him on radio/video play for months and months and months, and setting up for major concerts.

He doesn't seem that angry about it. Actually sounds like he explained it pretty rationally. Obviously he's disappointed but that's life. Ya'll reaching.

"We did something as far as the publishing deal that I had which is why I never really went at Puff because we figured something out on that end.”

I can understand why Sauce is mad but isn’t it possible that even if Puff cleared it first, Sting could have still demanded 100% of the publishing?

Song was in heavy rotation when Princess Diana passed so Sting/Puff must've saw crazy paper that year alone from this track

Puff sacrificed Sauce's publishing cause he wanted to surf on the emotion of Biggie's death.

Puff a smart snake.

:dahell:Puff caused him to lose 4 mill. He's right to be mad and still talk about it, even fr a century

Yep. Puff knew Sauce was gonna get jerked. He did not care.
:duck:

Puff would have took the publishing. he would have got a few points and his song writer fee

he wrote more than one song at Bad Boy how much pub does he have for any of those other songs?

then of course you ignore the fact that he followed that by saying he got paid out regardless. just not from the pub...

To me its clear Puffy knew what he was doing. Nobody "forgot", it was a calculated risk that worked for him.

Wy are you comparing those other songs to the one who made 4 millions?

Why would've Puff took the publishing if he knew that Sting was gonna take it? Why would Sauce let him take it?

Anyway, let's say Puff was negligent, he still has the right to be mad.

If someone's negligence led you to lose a 4 million bag, you will talk about it be too, even after 20 years. :yeshrug:

what happened here isn't new. This was commonplace with many samples over time - mostly white musicians.

Thing is that Sting would have probably taken the lion share of the publishing anyways.... and could have taken more if he took Diddy to court.

Steely Dan did the same thing to De La Soul and later Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz when they used the Black Cow sample in Uptown Baby. That pretty much destroyed the duo.

Biz Markie's rap career was destroyed by sample clearance issues.

Hell, no one gets any publishing for Fab's record Breathe because they gave it up, plus like 105k to Supertramp for the sample.

The latter is a more apt comparison. The counter to giving up the publishing is getting more name recognition, publicity, overall sales, popularity, etc etc etc by paying up for the rights to the sample. Worked for Diddy and worked for Fab, though it really cuts out writers like Sauce Money out the picture.

Sauce leans more towards the Peter Gunz/Lord Tariq route where they weren't able to popularize off using the sample. Hell, Truth Hurts is the best example.

Looking back, the late great Nipsey Hussle mentioned that Hov helped clear the Annie sample in 1998 - via Hard Knock Life - for all future clearances, including Hussle & Motivate.

Puff handles a lot of shyt, him missing out on one clearance out of probably a thousand is not on him. It’s the lawyers and the army of staff involved in released a gigantic major label album/single, specially in the 90s.

He also said Puff and him worked something out. Perhaps not the full amount, but Puff lost just as much. And if it wasn’t for Puff he wouldn’t even have the chance to make that bread at all.

fukk outta here with this scapegoat bullshyt.
Plus and foremost.
fukk puff!
Along with all those artists, their labels and the like.
Trying to play on sampling games too.
Dey old ass wondering why they shyt never gon pop again.
Plus why their old ass music they misappropriated is dead as fukk and never coming back.
When hiphop as a culture is about educating bboys and bgirls on the breaks.
They literally sued the people who created interest in their misappropriating face asses.
fukk'n goofie ass old groups. Sat and stole every rift from the church off top first.

Then never gave the church sampling credit.
Then come run up in our face.
For using a damn computer as an instrument.
Simply because we had no creative resources given to us like their gen.
Which totally and completely enabled them.
despite their idiocy and greed.
To even be active to steal from church music.

Trying to be greedy fukked them up more than us.

As they have no way to create any interest on their old ass music.

fukk them.

fukk all those old groups in the way.

They ruined the very think keeping them alive. I bet they wonder now like why nobody listens to their old shyt.
Simple you eliminated the people.
who dug in a crate and breathed life into your old ass project.

fukk those old groups.

Puff straight jacked it and worried about the consequences later...

The record was too big for sting not to clear

When you sitting on a game changer, you dont wait...

This is right after biggie died...

Puff seized the moment

fukk outta here.

Goofie was too busy trying to play the emotional sway card and ruined the admini for the record.
Plus ruined sauce career totally. As he was viewed as an artist that was a threat with admin issues. Admin issues he had no way to have a hand in at the time.

I’m starting to feel like Gene Deal really knows very little. Just one of like 30 sausage head bodyguards Puff had who got to see or hear nothing like an ordinary low level employee.

Everything he says is like his take on rumors or things that everyone knows, not seldom with non-factual takes

Sting taking everything. Only person off top he didn't completely fukk was Nas (The Message) because he was a fan of Illmatic lol. Flip side he took the majority of songwriting points for the Juice Wrld song that also sampled it.
lol that's interesting
