Yes yes because what will help a country facing a crippling demographics crisis is taking the already minimal trained and educated future workforce of the nation and making them even more undertrained and uneducated.

This surely will end well.

MBS tryna build an alternate reality where Saudi is a powerful independent actor, that doesnt cowtow to the West. Seeing the jingoistic language they are using, its clear these moves are aimed at a domestic audience. Nothing like a foreign target, with "plots" to interfere in internal affairs to circle around the flag.

They can afford to do with Canada because the ties are limited, and the few dealings they do have (defence, education) will have alternative sellers in the West. Very amateurish diplomacy on display. The country is supposedly transitioning from an oil economy, and to do so they will need foreign investment. No one is investing in a country this unpredictable and impulsive on their policy actions.

They were also beefing in 2012 . KSA likes to flex on less powerful Western nations. It's their MO to recall ambassador, cancel visas and make life difficult for the citizens of that country in KSA.

Sweden

Saudi Arabia to stop visas for Swedish citizens amid human rights row

United Arab Emirates recalls ambassador to Sweden after Saudi spat | DW | 18.03.2015

Netherlands

Netherlands: Saudi Arabia may curb trade ties over Wilders'...

Holland was about to get sanctioned :heh:

And like you said it goes down well in KSA, esp among the citizens less exposed to outside news, materials, books etc. They literally believe they're big dogs. The students who've returned home after studying abroad for years are :rudy:

And those students can't complain about this or else they will be thrown in jail too like Badawi.
They were getting free-tuition and room and board, most will probably just sit out and the Sauds will send them to American public schools :yeshrug:

I assumed their own foreign investment was going to be what was footing their diversification, and they'd just use their underemployed youth population and bring in a bunch of Libyan and Algerian engineers.

I’m no Canadian nationalist but these Royal family clowns are irritating me with this. Canada did what they’ve always done before any western nation on earth which is have a rigid stance on human rights and call out human rights violations (Except Israel of course)

They can’t get insolent about Canada calling them out and not even defend the point and simply deflect to some childish bullshyt. It shows how poorly run they are as a nation.

Canadians are nice but they're not pushovers. Canadians also have long memories. This will end badly for the Saudis at the end of the day.
