Cases like this are what defunding the police was actually about.

Instead of sending people with guns to deal with mentally ill people, you send people with the tools to handle them.

Defunding the police is stupid. They need to de-militarize the police and reallocate the funds to train officers better. Police training in the US is a complete joke. All the way from legal knowledge to firearms training to deescalation techniques. If you want officers that can handle mental health situations like this you need to train them consistently and they need to undergo yearly reviews. They also need to be rotated so they don’t burn out…which will require more officers to be trained. Which requires more money.

At that time, some of the same people will be questioning why didn't somebody call the police?

There are none folks just talking out of their ass. If it’s them or him, they are calling the authorities. The issue isn’t authorities becoming involved, it’s the unqualified authorities who are usually first on scene in this situations
