What do you think mental health professionals who are trained to deal with this do? And like I said, if it's a situation that they can't handle then calling the cops is always an option. shyt, you could even deploy them at the same time with the cops chilling in the background until needed. There are better ways to do this. You have to see that, right?
You can’t have unarmed folks dealing directly with the guy by themselves. They should be dispatched at the same time though and on scene together. Some unarmed person dealing with some loony with a knife is how it escalated in the first place

Few cities have it and more should

MOBILE CRISIS INTERVENTION TEAM (MCIT) - Mental health nurses and a specially trained police officer work together on 9-1-1 calls involving individuals experiencing a mental health crisis

British Columbia has something similar they send an ambulance along with the police and they take the lead the police are there as background. Not to antagonise the person having a breakdown.

One of the mayoral candidates wants to make it official and have a dedicated nurse and police team to deal with issues like this.
