I literally hate you but I can't disagree with this post.

:ehh:

Schools are partially funded via property taxes. If most parents within a district rent where do they expect the money to come from? Blame the parents for not handling their business after they decided to have kids.

It may very state to state or perhaps even income level but I pay school taxes on the properties I own and to the school district I actually live in I pay taxes to fund them as well where I rent. Instead of blaming renters you should be looking towards the lack of corporations, businesses, hotels, etc in the districts effected which should be making up the tax base.

I still blame the parents. They still chose to put themselves in a position to live in a struggle school district. Parents move all the time just so their children can go to a better school. its not just about paying for bus rides. People think that education is free... The information is free. Teaching is what you gotta pay for unless you do it yourself. Either way, it requires some form of sacrifice be it the parents time or someone else and if its someone else, you can't expect them to do it for free.

The link in the article says that Louisiana bans school districts from charging parents transportation fees. That is true, no parent is charged. The public schools in New Orleans are 90% charter schools. Each charter network is its own school district. Some charters offer bus service, some hand out city metro tokens, and some don't offer any bus service at all.

This radio story describes a girl's two-hour city bus trip to school:

New York City does not pay for transportation for high school students. Some families pay $2000 a year for transportation.

California used to have the best funded school system in the nation until Proposition 13 passed in 1978 limiting property taxes. The documentary Learning Matters: First to Worst (2004) shows the aftermath.
