If these people actually went to school when they were younger and paid attention during biology class, we wouldn't be in this mess right now...

A second wave was always a possibility but we should of flattened this thing and schools reopening in the fall...

my parents both teach, my dad said the teachers union sent something out about how they're preparing to go back, "for the kids sake", etc

my prediction is once the reality hits around august 15th, they'll be changing their tune. schools arent gonna open into coronavirus

Why is that worth noting? How does that information help in making the decision we're currently facing?

Any approach that is not 100% remote learning in much of the country will be disaster. I personally can't wear a mask for six straight hours so I don't understand why they think students can wear them for that long. What's more emotionally taxing? remote learning or walking into a half empty building with maks on, separated from your friends, and the air of sickness and death all around? I can't imagine a more anxiety inducing situation for kids.

Does this really seem like an emotionally healthy environment?

I don’t know how it is elsewhere but my problem is there doesn’t seem to be a cohesive plan.

It’s been 4-5 months now and really no questions are answered.

It’s like everyone in the position to make decisions is afraid and just waiting to see what happens.

Im open to in person or virtual learning if either are done right.

They should have been spending these 4 months to upgrade the schools to facilitate more cleanliness and social distancing. Maybe putting up some outdoor classrooms. Partitions in classrooms. Hand washing/sanitizing stations throughout the school. Etc etc.

On the flip side they could/should have been researching and finding the ideal programs and situations for distance learning. Hiring new counselors and experts to deal with the new challenges. Maybe even coming up with some classes for parents to attend to help them with navigating the new systems.


They’ve done NONE of this and are seemingly gonna just tell us send the kids to school with a mask on. Pure incompetence from top to bottom. American leadership absolutely sucks.

Im on the brink of just schooling my kids myself. I think that would be bad for my oldest mentally though, she’s kinda been struggling through this so far.

I was just talking to my sis who is a public school admin. They had been developing options all summer for reopening , but now she tells me Trump threw a wrench into their planning because Governor Kemp is a Trump bootlicker and who knows what he is going to do. There is a complete lack of leadership.

Yeah, I'm pretty confident that any attempt at re-opening will be a shyt show that won't last more than a month.
Especially considering American students are far different than Asian students when it comes to respecting authority, following rules, and such.

This gets at the heart of many problems facing education. Administrators and other leaders within education are beholden to the whims of politicians (federal, state, and local school boards). Despite their actual expertise in the field, all they can do is sit and wait for orders to come down from above and make the best of whatever politically expedient plan they've been handed.

but yea, my biggest concern are the kids I see in school districts like Oakland, where that distance learning shyt isn’t happening for most of them - there is no consistency in what schools do and/or kids simply ain’t doing the work. These kids are gonna be two years behind, many won’t be prepared for college and those on the cusp might miss out on college altogether

There is definitely risk for teachers and/or kids bringing it home to higher risk adults, but I don’t see how you realistically keep kids out of school for even another half a school year

My wife works in NYC public school as a guidance counselor. Who the hell is gonna stay home with our boys during the off days?

Is she going to able to be home too?

What about parents that don’t work in public schools how the hell are they gonna work this out?

Yet another domino effect of this idiot. This is going to be a nightmare.. The remote learning for younger kids is not good my older son who is 7 has ADHD and Speech delays and needs OT and PT. I have a 6 yr old too and what if both of their schedules are in conflict?

Are they packing buses or going to make several runs? Hire more bus drivers?

I’m not sure what the solution is but if your state is in the middle of an upswing. School opening shouldn’t be a discussion.
