I'm still shocked to see people say shyt like "that's without a hit single"

I mean, people still haven't caught on? a hit record doesn't sell an album, a hit record sells itself. an artist moves an album. people buy into schoolboy q, so they bought his album. simple as that. same with cudi...

that kid ink dude had a huge fukkin single with chris brown, what he sell? 50k?
I was trying to say in that other thread comparing Oxymoron to Rolling Papers, Thank Me Later, Finally Famous and shyt.

Dudes talking about opening up your audience and sean sold like what? 80K first week? SMH. Rappers like Q especially in this era need to focus on garnering a solid, die hard fan base and feeding them. Kid Cudi is the perfect example of somebody who no matter what will move solid units just because his fans love him and check for him. Dudes like that dont need any more promotion than a tweet saying, "Album in stores February 25th". The people will make an effort to cop

Basically..

and that's no slight at a hit record. A major mainstream hit could do a lot for an artist (see Macklemore) but at the end of the day, people are still gonna have to buy into your brand as an artist for you to have any type of staying power. There's a reason J. Cole sold more than 200k his first album with no single to back him (Work Out came later) while guys like Far East Movement do minimal album sells despite the fact that their singles pretty much dominate billboard.

I also hope rappers rethink mixtapes. Q was gonna put one out then said fukk it and turned it into Oxymoron. We may not eat as much, but rappers don't have to overwhelm us with music to build themselves up. Other than Wayne, the most successful rappers don't do them. There's something to be said about making people wait.

A$AP Ferg did this as well and Im sure he ate decently.

I said this a long time ago when people were trying to figure out why Big Sean flopped. I personally don't think any of these new rappers are substantially better than each other, but the difference is the those they project and what the fans buy into. People had bought into J.Cole after Friday Night Lights, and they went and supported him. I had no problem with Sean but I didn't feel compelled to support him.
