I remember CJ Mac dissed Spice 1 on Powda Puff for being a fake gangsta. Not a fake gang member because he wasn't from LA and never claimed a gang.
Fake narrative perpetrated by internet nerds years after the fact. The song is about Dre.
Aside from the fact that Mac and Spice had numerous mutual industry connections Spice was already racking up gun cases and in and out of jail by the time Powda Puff dropped, so the narrative wouldn't even make sense.
Theres also numerous interviews with Mac where he talks about certain people black balling him behind the scenes because of Powda Puff and his reputation in the streets, which he says is a big part of why he had to do business outside of LA initially with people like J Prince instead of getting a deal at home. If im not mistaken his interview with Soren Baker he gets pretty in depth about that era.
There definitely was a "who are actually studio gangsters" campain around 94 though that was putting into question the authenticity of acts like Spice , Comptons Most Wanted, Geto Boys, SCC etc, The Source ran several articles and columns about the subject. Although by all accounts none of the aforementioned artists were fabricating a street persona.
Q said rappers back then would claim Crip or Blood but you didn't know where they was from. He said only Snoop, Eazy E and DJ Quik really repped a set.
He should really clarify who hes talking about, which I assume is really just a couple of NWA members, cause what are the parameters? Are we talking household names? Platinum selling artists? Cause theres a lot more than those 3 who were really from a set.
