Houston has been my home for the past 12 years and it's time for everyone to learn about the history of Screwed & Chopped.

Peep this documentary, Screwed in Houston. It's 30 minutes long.

Chopped and screwed - Wikipedia
Chopped and screwed (sometimes called screwed and chopped or slowed and throwed) refers to a technique of remixing hip hop music which developed in the Houston hip hop scene in the early 1990s. This is accomplished by slowing the tempo down to between 60 and 70 quarter-note beats per minute and applying techniques such as skipping beats, record scratching, stop-time, and affecting portions of the music to make a "chopped-up" version of the original.

DJ Screw is largely recognized as the innovator behind the chopped and screwed genre.[2] DJ Screw's key technique involved playing the same record on both turntables with a delay between them of one beat and quickly moving the crossfader side to side. This created an effect where the words or beats in a song were repeated without interrupting its tempo.

Today it is still common to see screwed and chopped versions of mixtapes and albums released alongside the regular speed versions, sometimes in a double disc format with one disc screwed and the other regular speed.

Man I miss Screw. 7pm on Friday nights his street would be lit up with cars of people waiting on the new tapes to drop (before the shop on Cullen). Always spoke when he was out and about. He use to always ride solo in his Impala. (Club Oasis and Jamaica Jamaica for my H-Town nikkas) Its crazy b/c unless you went to his house you had no idea what he looked like. To witness the effect of those grey tapes floating throughout the city changed it forever. That man is a fukkin legend.

Yea man those early days were pretty wild and violent. My cousin lived off of W 43rd and Dacoma off of 290 and I use to dub all my screws and give em to him (spent tons on blank Maxell grey tapes). He knew he couldn't come down to Park Place and Telephone Rd. to grab a tape. Its weird but like you said everybody could tell where you were from coming to the opposite side of town. The jackin was out of hand and so many boys were getting down right murdered for the OG swangers and slabs (I personally can't stand these new hideous ones from TWW). He made copies and gave them to his friends on the North. Screw would actually make personal tapes for you for $20-25 just give him a tracklisting and he would do it no problem. Had a few friends in school back in the day who he did it for. One of them (my patna Marcell ) was how I got to know him and got introduced when dropping off a list.
