If you go back far enough, you would probably be able to see people selling off their six-year-old daughters to the local slave caravan

Don't have to go that far.
Haiti got the "indentured servant" game locked up.
I only spent my pre-K years there.
But i vaguely remember a lady that lived with us who cooked all the meals, kept the house spotless, hand washed all the clothes etc.
Found out years later that she was like 14... with like 8 years of experience.
The little money we were giving her went to feeding her family back in the country.
I asked my mom how she could possibly live with that on her conscious.
She told me that we treated her well.
"We gave her a plate at every meal"
" I bought her a pair of church shoes"
"We didn't beat her that one time we caught her stealing rice."
"Besides, those poor girls in the country have few options.
"She was just a simple girl who would have had no future or education."
It's been years and she still won't admit that we were slave owners.
Still...
I know it's fukked up
But sometimes I miss the convenience.
