Searching newspapers from the 19th and 20th centuries

Anyone ever done this? Google News is very interesting. They've got up alot of newspapers around the globe going back to the 1800's. I searched my local newspaper (live in the South) and here are a few ads regarding slaves I found interesting. This is from 1857:

Negro Murderer Lynched
Tampa, Flo., Nov. 14. —Preech Neils the negro arrested for the double murder at Mslntosh yesterday was lynched by a mob at Ocala this afternoon. More than 200 men unexpectedly surrounded the jail, overpowered the pailer, and took the negro two miles outside Ocala turned him loose, and told him to run. As he fled, the bullets from more than 100 guns were fired into his body, shooting him to pieces:

Posse Pursuing Negro Murderer
Birmingham, Ala., Oct. 23. —A posse including militiamen and led by bloodhounds is pursuing Frank Harrison, a negro, who has killed two deputy sheriffs and wounded another. Harrison yesterday killed former deputy sheriq Thomas Cooper at Northport, Alabama. To-day he killed deputy sheriff Brown Horton and a negro, wounded deputy sheriff Bombay and wounded another negro.

im sure they pressed out something devilish, going through a few hundred of these regular occurrences and its easy to see the pattern of their intese desire for death or harm to black men women and children, all of this really just got smoothed over like it was nothing

Booker Washington Loses Suit
New York, Nov. 6.—Booker T. Washington, the noted negro educator failed to receive satisfaction at law for the beating he received from Henry A. Ulrich, a white man, last March. Ulrich was acquitted this afternoon of the charge of assault preferred by Washington. The negro was laid up in a hospital for several days after his fight with Ulrich, who swore that he found Washington peeping into key holes, that Washington insulted a woman friend of Ulrich's and that Washington struck the first blow.

OPPOSES ADMISSION OF NEGROES
To the Editor of the Daily Princetonian: I am sure - that almost everyone will agree with the principles and ideals which you expressed in your editorial entitled White Supremacy at Princeton. However the phrase "at Princeton" suggests that you propose to start giving the negro equal rights here. It is true that we must start somewhere, but there are two considerations which should be weighed: how much the negro race would be helped by admitting its members to Princeton, and the total effect of such a move on the university itself. There is a large southern element in our student body, to whom negro equality means negro political dominance. The effect of negro students upon this large group, and its ultimate effect on the university, should be carefully considered. As yet I can offer no definite opinion on the matter, but at first glance the bad effects of such a move at Princeton seem to far outweigh the benefits which would be rendered to the negro race. Thomas Ennenga '45 One question especially suggests itself: How is Princeton, in admitting Negroes as students, augmenting the "Negro political dominance" which is said by our correspondent to be the basis of the feeling of the Southerner against the Negrol Ed.

Most of these publishing companies have already either destroyed or have stored away in a secure place most of these old articles. Gotta cover up their dirt. I'm surprised these articles haven't been removed from the public domain.....

it's funny, but reading these news clippings gives me hope about the white race. they were so evil just centuries ago, filled with so much hate that they'd kill us for even wanting to read. but now, blacks are able to go to college and pursue gainful careers that help them build families. i think white people and their views on the black man are evolving, and maybe we just need to give them more time until they full accept our integration into this society.

He has a point. In essence he is saying that racism is starting to unwind itself from the collective mind of white racists in America. I see what he's saying.
