May I know which NYC hospital you volunteer in? I am trying to get a position at NYP and I am considering going to SGU or Ross. SO knowing about these hospitals will def help me plan. Thanks in advance
I volunteered at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx. But NYP is also known for being a top partner with Ross and SGU. You should be good there. Jamaica Hospital in Queens is another one.

Thank you very much for your swift reply. I sincerely appreciate it.
Just one more question....was your volunteer experience just a regular volunteer one...or like an internship for Pre-Med? Yeah, I got a call back from NYP Columbia for the ED so I will see. Also, are you yourself a medical student? Sorry for the question truly don't mean to get in your business just want more info.

So long as your school is accredited, you should have no problems practicing. There is a stigma, however this only really hinders you if you're trying to get a really prestigious position. For example, if you're trying to become the head doctor at Johns Hopkins, but you went to medical school in Mexico, and other doctors went to more prestigious schools, they would likely get the top position over you(unless you happen to perform better despite your school's reputation).

All the md's I know don't care about any head dr. position at a hospital or research facility or anything like that, they just wanted to practice medicine(and make a lot of money).
Thank you so much for your swift reply. I truly appreciate you getting back to me.

Yeah man, it seems as long as if the school is accredited and you bust your ass and make things happen (scoring high on USMLE, etc). I am thinking about maybe applying to SGU or Ross and just grinding from there but everyone I ask for advice from tell me no. That I will have trouble, etc. I do not care to be the head at all, although I do want to become a neurosurgeon (or Emergency medicine if that doesn't pan out).

Are you yourself a medical student? Or perhaps a current pre-med?

I'm a current pre-med applying next year. And my volunteer experience there was more of both. The experience is as much as what you decide to put into it. Montefiore allowed us to freely participate move around the ER with any doctor that were willing to teach us for a bit on some of the diagnosis they do. And pretty much every doctor there were happy to take us in. For me, I stuck and rotated myself with 3 doctors that I found most interesting to be with. One of the doctors I was with also happens to be part of the admissions commute for Albert Einstein Medical School. . The experience was pretty much what you make of it. They were pretty realxed on the rules for us on what we do as long as we had our hospital IDs. I even participated in a surgical procedure for a fractured skull by carefully cutting up the last trace of skin in a patients head. It was scary as fukk holding a scalpel.

They even allowed us to go to other departments when it came to certain patients that had to be referred. But not all of them.

Wow. I bet that was an priceless experience. Congratulations on being part of that.

The individuals I talk to at the moment who are volunteering where I might be say that its basically all by yourself. There are no rules to what you have to do there. There isn't a program or someone watching you. I am curious if this was how your experience was, like no formal guidelines...

I feel a bit nervous on that and would like to know if you could offer any tips and advice on making the most of my time. Like for instance, you seem to have shadowed a lot of physicians....how did that come about? Did the position you applied for come with that ? Or is this something you personally did and proactively searched for the physicians? Please offer any and all advice you can. I am a pre med who unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on who you ask) focused on research through my undergrad and am now scrambling now to get more MD experiences in.

Also, other than that volunteer work, what else you did? I am looking for more things to get involved in and would like to know if you did anything.

I SINCERELY appreciate you replying to me so swiftly and talking to me. Thank you

Yeah, in regards to the USMLE, if you open your own practice (as most MD's want to do) then a passing score is a passing score.

Now everything I know is in regards to general practitioners, not specialists. I think it's probably the same, but it's possible that surgeons are under more scrutiny. We definitely know that have higher mal-practice insurance for obvious reasons.

And yes i'm a current student. Are you a pre med?

Nice man. Thanks again.

I am a Pre-Med (neuroscience major). And currently in my final semester. Im just taking upper level bio classes to have something to do. I have to take the MCAT, and I will be taking the new one. I will applying after the summer to med schools, post bacc programs, and maybe carib.

You're a med student, nice! I sincerely hope everything is going well. I hopefully will be there one day! Are you in the US or in Carib? You don't have to state the school,....

Thanks, I'm in the US. Although I almost went to the Caribbean, as they accepted me early and was really persistent about it. They kept sending me non stop emails to come down there.

Congrats on the neuroscience, just the idea of that scares me, my plate was full just with general biology.

Nice man. Congratulations again bro. I wish you much success and I hope you remain focused. Yeah, they are known for doing that lol. Which one would you have attended, Ross, SGU, or another one?

And thank you man. Neuroscience is alright lol not as tough as it sounds. My school unfortunately has a focus on the psychology aspect more than bio, although thats why I am taking upper level bio to get the true experience. But The research I got to conduct was amazing...working with animals, exploring the amygdala, the hippocampus, doing surgeries and presenting at conferences was a priceless experience. lol But
