Trump has left the US woefully unprepared for the new, multi-polar world we're entering. His foreign policy has been absolutely, utterly disastrous. And Mattis was the last man in the room holding anything together resembling sanity and calm nature.

When the SecDef is just another GOP establishment bootlicker then the cards fall away and the US is left in the worst position possible. A declining power without key allies in regions it needs them and no ability to fix it.

We don't talk enough about how bad his FP has been from a contextual level.

Which part are you disagreeing with? Or even what's your take? Do you think Trump has left brillantly prepared for the new, multi-polar world order we're entering? Or do you think that Mattis is batshyt crazy and was going around tearing down everything?

Notice I didn't say he's a dove or a saint.

The US is a global power, we need to position ourselves for the world that's coming where we are not THE global power. Mattis knew this, Trump and the GOP do not. It's not hard to grasp. SecDef has unilateral discretion for the most part in interpreting and extrapolation presidential orders. It's why Mattis didn't adhere to any of Trumps insane 'BAN ALL THE PEOPLE' tweets at 3AM with anything other than a "Yeah no, we're not doing that". You replace that with someone without any experience or a spine and what do you think is going to happen? More hawks are going to line up just like what happened with the Iraq War. People with money and influence will push for a war with Iran and they'll get what they want because Trump's idea of foreign policy is "who kisses my ass the most wins". The US needs allies in key regions and to have more than token lip service against totalitarianism.

Mattis quit because he was incensed that the US is abandoning the Kurds to slaughter at the hands of the Turks, we're condoning a genocide and abandoning an ally in a key region because Trump had a tantrum at 4 in the morning because Fox new told him so. And now the only person to tell this shrieking manchild "No" when it comes to levying the most powerful military in human history just quit and said "find someone else".

That should scare everybody.

I’m skeptical the withdrawal decisions are part of a grand strategy devised by Bolton/Pompeo. There’s no way either would argue in favour of a withdrawal in Syria, where Iran’s hand will be strengthened or from Afghanistan for that matter.

I think this is very much Trump following his instincts and doing something he knows will capture attention and confuse/divide his opponents. From the standpoint of domestic politics, I think he’s right and this may be a brilliant move. I can very much see Dems sounding incoherent on FP as he undercuts all the policy preferences of their base.

Remember Trump isn’t driven by ideology whatsoever, for better or worse ( usually worse). In the case of Iran, I don’t think he personally feels any which way, so if he decides that a grand bargain is the best way forward for his political chances he will do it. I wouldn’t even be slightly surprised if we hear of Trump planning a summit between him and the Supreme Leader next summer.

He tried to sweet talk Rouhani into a meeting at the UN.

And the withdrawals are really why I don’t think Trump wants a war with Iran. If he did, there’s been opportunities to start shid in Iraq or Syria after the ISIS stuff.

And the Dems are sounding incoherent on foreign policy :snoop: you’re right that this maybe a good political move especially as the federal government is going to partial shutdown.

Every Kurd in Syria will be dead by March :francis: Erdogan will get his genocide he's been dying for for so very long.

You think Iraqi Kurdistan jumps in? Or even Iranian Kurds?
I think Iraqi Kurds will take in some, but Erdogan has been itching to just lay down the YPG with heavy fire and slaughter them wholesale for years now. Some will flee, but most will die. It's their home after all.

What the US should do is just partition Iraq along sectarian lines like the people want. :yeshrug:

No way, they’ll reach a deal with Assad before that happens.
As fukked up as this is I hope Russia forces Assad to see relative reason and that his continued existence relies on keeping Turkey in check. :francis:

Whole situation is just fukked and the Trump admin is determined to make it all worse by the day.

That’ll certainly be the case, both Assad and Russia know the Kurds give them significant leverage over Turkey which they will not hand over for free. The Turkish threats are bluster IMO, and the Kurds certainly planned for this possibility.
