To be fair, I don't think a self-described Libertarian has ever come as close to winning the Republican nomination as Bernie Sanders did to winning the Democratic nomination.
That's a valid argument; however, the Democratic field was notoriously weak, I question his ability to win primaries if someone like Elizabeth Warren were in the field, and I guess it depends on what your definition of close is. Of course you can only compete with the people who enter so I don't hold that against him and he certainly did better than most expected.
I'd say Ron Paul was the right's equivalent to Bernie Sanders. Old guy who'd been around for decades, discernible from the establishment (Paul so than Sanders), and appealed to college aged voters. Paul predated the Tea Party and was by and large a Tea Party hero (before the Kochs heavily co-opted it). The Justice Democrats were created by Sanders supporters.
I'm sure you can see the superficial narrative similarities.
