WASHINGTON (AP) -- Segregation is making a comeback in U.S. schools.

Progress toward integrated classrooms has largely been rolled back since the Supreme Court issued its landmark Brown v. Topeka Board of Education decision 60 years ago, according to a report released Thursday by the Civil Rights Project at UCLA. Blacks are now seeing more school segregation than they have in decades, and more than half of Latino students are now attending schools that are majority Latino.

In New York, California and Texas, more than half of Latino students are enrolled in schools that are 90 percent minority or more, the report found. In New York, Illinois, Maryland and Michigan, more than half of black students attend schools where 90 percent or more are minority.

Project co-director Gary Orfield, author of the "Brown at 60" report, said the changes are troubling because they show some minority students receive poorer educations than white students and Asian students, who tend to be in middle-class schools. The report urged, among other things, deeper research into housing segregation, which is a "fundamental cause of separate-and-unequal schooling."

If the black schools had black teachers I wouldn't care. We all know these cacs don't care to teach our children properly.

i don't know that it's necessarily that they can't teach our children properly. i think it's more a result of poor parenting that neglects to instill in those children a yearning for knowledge and a willingness to be taught. i've seen it with my own eyes. a lot of black children are very unruly and undisciplined, making many teachers - including black ones - less inclined to care about them over the course of the school year.

black people need to begin taking ownership of our own role in the problems that beset our community.

I agree but when you ask black people to be better parents it usually falls on deaf ears.

I mean, yeah, segregation is a bad thing, but reading how bad a lot of y'all had it going to white schools in that "real nikka wake up" thread I'm gonna have my kid go to a majority black school just like I did :manny:
yup no way in hell do i send my kid to a school where they are the only black face in the classroom

segregation never left...its called hypersegregation and anyone with a brain can see its everywhere, especially in the urban sectors

not necessarily true. much of the segregation we witness is white america responding to the toxic state of certain segments of black america, which they unfortunately blame all of for. yes, it's racism, but it's also largely self-inflicted thanks to many blacks who willingly embrace that culture.
