Also this is a very neoliberal way of thinking : self-teaching is better than academia (=stay out of it while we continue sending our children to top-notch universities), be an entrepreneur (=takes risks because society doesn't care about you). It's the whole "Pull your bootstraps up" way of thinking : supposedly we're all the same (we aren't) and have the same opportunities (we don't) so if you don't self-teach yourself and start your own business, well it's your fault you failed. While the leading classes keep on accumulating wealth and knowledge, and passing it down to their kids who network in big universities.
But yeah every now and than you get a cinderella story of the so-called "self-made man", "proof" that you don't need to study.
