Hey all,

So after some time i have decided to pursue a career in I.T. because im naturally good at computers and the money is fantastic. First I was going to go the a+ > network + > security+ route, but after doing some research, it makes more fiscal and logical sense to start with the CCNA.

There is a course for it at my local community college but i decided to save 5K and learn my self. Here is what im using to study:

NetworKing

Im watching the videos on that YouTube channel and taking notes.

I am also reading the Cisco Certified Network Associate Study Guide By Tod Lammle, Seventh Edition.

What i want to know is if that is enough. I dont have any access to switches or routers but I am willing to learn the best i can. If theres any brehs that can help point me in the right direction or perhaps even mentor me, id be grateful. Im located in Atlanta so theres a lot of opportunity that I do not want to miss

What are you doing right now?

Are you focusing on cybersec or network and routing?

The Official Cisco CCNA book by Wendell Odom is also very good. Just avoid the subnetting section (unless he has fixed this in a recent version) because he over explains it. Also get Cisco's Packet Tracer program (free download via Google search).

OP, if you are in need of videos, I have CBT nuggets and other courses hosted on my streaming site. Ill hook u up with a login if you need one.
I also have a GNS3 lab set up so that you can create a topology on my server from anywhere on the internet. Ive found it pretty useful for CCNP studies

Hit up eBay and buy some 1841 routers and Catalyst 2960 (non G) switches if you want some real hardware to work with. For CCNA, i'd just use GNS3 though

What is the best route to go if I want to focus on cybersec? The only Cert I have now is A+.
You need a meatier cert first, say CCNA or MCSA, then you can go for security..say CCNA Security.
You might also want to look into the Security +

Id like to focus strictly on networking. Id like to be a network engineer eventually. i should also clarify that i have no previous I.T. experience. I have experience building web sites but only through wordpress

CBT nuggets are videos which go over the info needed to pass whatever course you're trying to take. They're all over Pirate bay if you want to DL some. Similar to the youtube videos you're watching.

Are they videos that go over exactly what the test will be on or just like a regular youtube like video that teaches you CCNA? Do you recommend just watching said videos and cramming for the test?

No, they teach you the concepts you need to know to pass the test. Both do the same, just your preference on the instructor. The CBT guys are more engaging to me so I prefer them.

I've never taken any cert tests so I'm not sure. In the same boat as you.
