You shouldn't have kids if you can't afford them. 3 GB's of smartphone data every month is a luxury.

I didn't have either of those things while I worked minimum wage jobs.

If this was the year 2000 it'd be a luxury. But this is 2016, a time where many jobs do not even keep paper applications anymore and even school happens online.

But even if one were to ignore context and say people with minimum wage jobs should just forgo keeping up with the times and live like they're in the 60s: What should be done about the fact that the majority of the jobs available to all grown, adult Americans don't pay much more than minimum wage and still aren't enough to support a family on? Should people just stop having kids? Eventually the problem has to be solved somehow. Saying to people to stop working jobs that pay poorly, when that is the most abundant type of job in the market by far, is not doing anything. Whether you agree with minimum wage itself being raised or not, wages must be corrected somehow.

Do you have something to support that? Median household income is around $50K. Well above minimum wage and more then enough to support a family of 3 or 4. Two people working minimum wage would only make about $30K a year.

If you're a single person on minimum wage or even a couple both on min wage or anything around there, then no you shouldn't be having kids.

I agree with your point though that inequality is a bit ridiculous right now. Not as crazy as some of Bernie's supporters make it out to be but it is a problem. I think the issue is the "entitlements" we have in this country are the wrong ones. If we had universal college and transportation (and actually had mass/public transportation to write home about) you would see a much more mobile and fair society. Not equal, but fair. I'm not going to go as far as to say welfare and medicaid encourage poverty, or that "welfare queens" lazily sit on their butt and just happily rake the checks because I don't think anyone wants to be that poor. But those entitlements also don't encourage or really enable the poor person's position to ever change.

this is such an interesting thing you say
I think it's the cell phone and car manufacturers who think, and desperately want, everyone should have a cell phone and car
I think without all those people you can't have the Potemkin village of an economy that capitalism strives for so ardently

Oh I agree 100% with that. GM killed public transit in Detroit and most other cities to fuel the car business. That set America back decades economically and worsened inequality severely.

You seem to be quite obsessed with the spending habits of the working poor. I assume you have actual data on this?:comeon:
You do realize landline phones have decreased nearly 50% over the last decade? Surely you're not suggesting owning a phone is a luxury?

Public transportation is very much hit and miss across most of the country. NY and Chicago are the only cities in the country with 24hr public transportation. Which means its damn near impossible to work a night shift without a car unless you live in one of those cities

You're not supposed to be supporting yourself at minimum wage jobs.

The problem is too many people work at fast food places and think they should still have smartphones and cars.

Min wage jobs are jobs for highschoolers not supporting themselves.
most jobs are paying minimum wage unless its a trade or a job requiring a degree though. And not everyone can drive trucks or buses or go to school.

Public transportation system fails because of individualistic society, companies outsource and evade taxes and Americans still consume.

Push harder for marijuana to be legalized than higher minimum wages

You do realize you don't have to buy a an 800$ smartphone if you're poor for basic communication. If someone can't work a 2 AM night shift because of transportation then find a job with morning, afternoon, and evening shifts. Most places of business in Urban areas where the poor reside aren't open 24 hours anyway due to crime so your point is moot

I'll post what I posted earlier in regards to this assertion people keep pushing in this thread:

"Do you have something to support that? Median household income is around $50K. Well above minimum wage and more then enough to support a family of 3 or 4. Two people working minimum wage would only make about $30K a year."

For entry level jobs when you only have a high school diploma or less, you're right, but what do you expect? High schools don't allow you specialize enough to get an actual career job upon graduation.
