Drake is a punchline rapper.

Kendrick Lamar is a lyricist.

Whats the difference? Lyricists use more words than rappers, friends. They often have the ability to use more words per bar, than rapper while maintaining advanced forms of rhyme structure and cadence.

Drake uses about 10 syllables per bar. This is a typical penchant of a punchline rapper.

I'm not making excuses for Kendrick nikka, his body of work speaks for itself. A rapper doesn't have to write a bunch of one-liners that dumb nikkas can write on Facebook to be dope. A dope writer can captivate an audience, invoke emotion, paint pictures, and/or other various things that can showcase that ability to write.

How you listening to a genre that's so heavily focused on lyrics/lyricism but you only care for one aspect of writing?

name another great writer that doesn't have quotables

:laff:

The most renowned lyricists in the world use a lot of words in their raps.

Its not like

I go to homes and shoot up the place / walk up to holmes put boot to his face - not lyricism

Blaze a 50, sit back in the drop top Azure Bentley
Of course with me, this chick who'd make Bobby divorce Whitney - lyricism

I don't see how you can compare a Hip Hop concept album with an R&B record with some raps sprinkled in.

From a strictly hip hop stand point it's Kendrick by a mile. In terms of popular music, Drake is right there and his album is a bit more accessible to the average person listening to music.

With that said I am bored with Drake's album already and I still play a handful of tracks off GKMC. That's just me personally. I can see why people would prefer the Drake record at the same time.

but i don't think the amount of words used is the end all be all when it comes to lyricism

example:

"Places that I've been, things that I have seen, what you call a nightmare, are what I have as dreams"
