There was once a man called Saul who was a snitch for the Romans and some hypocritical Jews that had one job and that was to kill the followers of a new dangerous prophet. He realised that killing them only strengthened the belief of those that remained and caused his teachings to spread faster. Saul then changed his name to Paul and instead of killing them physically, outsmarted some of them by twisting the message of the prophet (claiming to have met him on a road) to lead them astray. Later ushering in the Romans to use religion to spread their rule.
The teachings of the prophet, dangerous to both Jews and Romans were lost. Or so they think. They even get people to celebrate his death.
