Serious question : How can Carson be a candidate?

Disclaimer : I'm not an American and am not necessarily familiar with nominations etc.

My question is this :

How does one become candidate for nomination for a party in the US? I mean over here in Europe it's usually people who have had some political experience at some level (mayor, deputee, minister, etc), and/or was "brought up" by this or that party.

I assume it's different in the US. But still : to my limited knowledge, most candidates for nomination have SOME political experience, even crazy Palin somehow was a governor.

But what has Carson ever done to be even in the race? I mean can just anyone with "success" and money say "Hey, I'm running for nomination"? Did he have any role in the GOP? Don't they at some point "screen" who is running for nomination?

Sorry if this sounds very naive and uniformed but I'm really baffled that he could even get so far.

All you have to do is fill out a form and pay a fee

Carson got traction because he was a very famous surgeon and there was an incident were he criticized Obama at a public event while Obama was seated a few feet away

Neither Donald Trump nor Carly Fiorina have any political experience. They are millionaires who ran businesses which makes them think they are capable of running a country.

Dwight Eisenhower was elected president in 1952 having never held a prior elected position. He was a former Army general and university president.

He's really popular in the bible belt I take it. This fundie girl I met who's dialed in was posting pictures with his quotes on facebook yesterday.

Thanks brehs for the answers, actually yeah I realized by reading them that Trump doesn't have any political experience, and I totally forgot the whole Deeeez Nuts thing

Still kind of crazy for me to understand that one could seriously be considered as a candidate for the most powerful country in the world without ANY kind of political activity whatsoever (@wheywhey I would consider military as a fomr of "political" involvment, I mean technically you're working for the good of your country, so in a sense it's a form of public office of sorts, but that's besides the point of the thread)
