That question hinges on a broader discussion that needs to take place about immigration reform.

Both Rethugs and DemoCacs have failed to pass comprehensive immigration reform.

That being said, there's only one side that's actively trying to make the process more draconian, barbaric, and in violation of human rights.

Borders existed LONG before freedom of movement was shut down. You can have separate spheres of governance without arresting families looking for a better life.

I'm pretty sure that for MOST of American history, just about any Mexican could just cross the border without pre-approval and would be allowed into the country.

Yes. I don't need to get pre-approval to go to Canada, I just show up at the border and they'd let me in. Same is true of Mexico.

It's proof that you can have borders without restricting freedom of movement.

Now, could I live and work there legally for an extended period of time without official approval? No. But the tendency to block that approval, again, is a recent historic thing. They used to just let anyone stay except the criminals, until they started getting racist about it cause too many "different" people were coming in.
