Best I Faced: Shane Mosley - The Ring

Editor’s Note: This feature originally appeared in the October 2012 issue of THE RING Magazine. It is being represented following the announcement that Shane Mosley has retired from the sport.

Sugar Shane Mosley’s legacy will be one of a man who took on all challenges and was rarely involved in a boring fight.

The five-time titleholder in three divisions, known for his warrior mentality and natural gifts, engaged a long list of fighters who were among the best of their time. Among them: Oscar De La Hoya, Vernon Forrest, Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Miguel Cotto – all future Hall of Famers.

Mosley was a dominating lightweight, building a record of 32-0 (with 30 knockouts) before moving up to welterweight. And he had great success against his Mexican rivals, winning 21 consecutive fights against them before losing to Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in May.

Among Mosley’s career highlights are two victories over De La Hoya, although the second was tarnished when he later acknowleged using performance-enhancing drugs before the fight, two knockouts of Fernando Vargas and KOs of Ricardo Mayorga and Antonio Margarito.

Mosley also defeated world titleholders Jesse James Leija, John John Molina, Phillip Holiday and Luis Collazo, knocking out out Leija and Molina. Among his losses: Forrest (twice), Winky Wright (twice), Cotto, Mayweather and Pacquiao.

Mosley (46-8-1, 39 KOs) retired in June at the age of 40. He has moved into training and promoting his son Shane Mosley Jr., a 21-year-old amateur who hopes to fight in the 2016 Olympics.

Mosley shared with THE RING the best fighters he faced in 10 key categories.

BEST JAB
Vernon Forrest and Oscar De La Hoya:Oscar had a terrific jab, but when I fought Vernon, Vernon had a tremendous jab as well. It was hard for me to get past Vernon’s jab, but at the same time, Oscar had a really fast, snapping jab along with a good left hook.

So I had problems with both guys. Vernon had the height to go with it as well.

BEST DEFENSE
Winky Wright: Winky had, I think, the best defense back then. Floyd had good defense, but Winky caught me earlier in my career. I think that Winky was really good at catching and countering. He kept his hands up really high and I think that back then, he would have had the best defense. He was very, very good at catching and then touching you.

FASTEST HANDS
Floyd Mayweather Jr.: I would again have to say that’s Floyd. Floyd’s timing and his speed were very, very quick. He was able to get off the gun really quick. I felt like I was competing with him, but I would have to say that Floyd had the fastest hands of anyone that I’ve fought.

FASTEST FEET
Sergio Mora: That would have to be Sergio Mora. I was surprised at how well he moved. He got around the ring very well. Very fast feet. Moved good. He was a junior middleweight who was fighting me at that time, but I was still surprised at his footspeed.

BEST CHIN
Antonio Margarito: I would have to say that Margarito had the best chin. Even though I knocked him out, it took a long time of me hitting him on the button. Round after round, he stood up against some solid shots.

Even when I hit Floyd with one solid shot, he wobbled when I got the opportunity. Floyd had a good chin, but I would have to say that the guy with the best chin was Margarito. He stood up to Pacquiao’s punches as well as mine until I was able to break him down.

SMARTEST
Mayweather: He knows how to change up the fight and the tempo in the middle of the fight. He can go from one thing and one strategy to another very well. If you get one thing working, he can change up and make you have to do something else. He was probably the smartest.

STRONGEST
Fernando Vargas: The strongest guy that I fought, physically, was Fernando Vargas. He hit pretty hard but he was also very strong, physically. Winky Wright was strong, but Vargas was very, very physical in both fights.

BEST PUNCHER
Forrest and Manny Pacquiao: I think that the best puncher would have to be Vernon Forrest because back then I had a pretty good chin and I had never been dropped, and he was the first guy to drop me. His power is a little different than Pacquiao had. But those are the two guys who knocked me down, so those are the two guys that I would have to give it to.

I’m leaning more toward Vernon, because he had the heavier punches, whereas Pacquiao’s was more of a flash knockdown where I was dizzy.I don’t know if it was the injury that I had or the punching power that Pacquiao possesses. But I was never buzzed by anybody else like I was by those two guys.

BEST BOXER
Mayweather: That would probably have to be Floyd. It’s how he evades punches with a blend of his defense and his offense. He’s always on his toes and he’s always slipping and sliding.

BEST OVERALL:
Mayweather: That would have to be Floyd. He had everything. He had about three different categories where he was the best at. Floyd was the best overall fighter. The most speed, best defense and a good jab and good offense. I think that it’s also what he does with his movement and his angles.

To be fair, he caught me later in my career. But he puts everything together, offensively and defensively, and he has the movement.

Shane had an opportunity to catch Floyd earlier in his career, but had an issue with his dentist :francis:

I remember being :mjcry: when Shane lost twice to Vernon and Winky. I can't remember which rematch it was (want to say Vernon) but its possibly debatable he won it imo.

Very good read.

I forgot how good Winky Wright was for a while. He was really that dude for a hot minute.
i've always said winky had a slightly stronger defense than floyd. winky could really stand toe to toe and be in your chest and still be impossible to hit. and he was doing this vs truly devastating punchers. i'm glad shane gave me some vindication on that. winky will go down as one of the most underrated ever. just wasn't appreciated like he should have been. shane also said he had the best jab he ever faced. that's the one fight from 147-154 in floyd's prime that I felt floyd would lose clearly. winky was strong as fukk physically....like a tank. had a great defense, great jab, great ring IQ, great counter punching, and a granite chin. aside from not having huge power, he was damn near a perfect fighter....about as complete as somebody can get. I mean dude moved up to 170, pudgy as fukk and gave elite b hop a toss up fight. if it wasn't for the dirty tactics by b hop busting up winky's eye, I think he probably wins that fight handily. nobody from 147-154 wanted to see winky at that time. oscar had the balls to fight damn near anybody in the world but he ducked winky to the very end.

on top of all the skills winky had, people never talk about his good his speed was too. dude had some really fast hands. he was able to match a young shane mosley in the speed department.

Problem was winky never went for the kill unless you fought him unorthodox..dude was even more defensive than floyd..had a hell of a jab though

I agree on Vernon, dude was nice. I never got why he tried to bomb out with Mayorga instead of boxing that breh. I'm not sure what the exact timeline was with his bum shoulder though, I'm sure that limited his options.

Imo Shane and Oscar both still had a lot in the tank, Floyd was calling them out when he was at 140, granted DLH and Shane had already moved up to 154 but he was looking to get it done at 147 early. Floyd was chasing those cats for years/part of the reason he moved up in the first place to get big fights/fight the biggest names.

By the time Floyd made his way up to 147 properly it was too late, Shane and Oscar were battle worn IMHO. Oscar was a faded part time fighter and going to promoter route in earnest, Shane had been through the Winky, Forrest, and Oscar row and would never be the same, except for that bright spot when he turned back the clock and busted Margo's ass.

shyt just didn't line up right, no fault of anyone.

One fight I wish we could have saw was Corey Spinks vs Floyd at 147, but again shyt just didn't line up right. Corey will be forever underated too, because he beat Jermain Taylor, he should have been the first WW undisputed champ to become the undisputed MW champ, but they stole it from him.

cory was nice man..and agree he should have gotten the nod and the MW belts from jermain taylor..spinks vs floyd would have been an interesting fight..they were 154 champs at the same time werent they?

Yeah but Cory was way faded at 154 when they both had titles.

i think the fight with taylor took a little something out of him..i mean he still won another 154 belt after but seeing him ko'ed by K9..twice was just bad
That loss when you know you won and they took away your legacy, which I think he would have surpassed his father and uncle , that makes you lose your love for the game.

That said I think he started struggling with his devotion and weight after that and it was just over for him being elite. It makes me mad thinking about it and how he isn't even mentioned except for getting knocked out by Zab in that rematch after that killer ring entrance with Nelly.
