Whole episode is worth the watch. But I agree with him here. Those nuances that went into the songs are a thing if the past.

I was going to say because there’s a lack of actual love in music today, but seems like he’s talking about the sound specifically.

Of course, he's right. However, songs are so short now that having that type of differentiation in tone and melody isn't as noticeable.

Back in the day, you mostly had average-looking people with elite vocal skills. If the vocal skills were less than elite, they made up for it with dancing, playing instruments at an elite level and having some kind of sex appeal.
Now it's people that are (often) more physically attractive with average skills...or at least they're "plug & play." Good enough to do what the studios require but easily replaceable. They want a model with forgettable music that the machine can control and use for its own ends.

also, record labels abandoned Black artists and made R&B white(Timberlake, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, etc...) and those people are simply mimicking what they think Black people sound like and they approach R&B/Pop from a formula standpoint. Lab Grown Artists.
