While i'm certain there's a racial aspect here, there is also a shift in energy...one that MJ played a huge role in, at a time when a celebrity was more likely to be ridiculed for such a transformation. MJ catches a lot of hate (some of it justified in a sense) but he also opened a lot of people's minds in regards to how you judge people who are different.
