I'm not sure what the longterm viability is for islands in this position.

I'll have to read more and see if the situation is reversible in Jamaica's case.

As far as water wars go.... yeah absolutely unless we step up our renewable energy game and get more serious about protecting our water supplies.

Most people just get caught up in the rat race and don't explore options like this or they spend their money elsewhere, like buying a brand new car. There are plenty of places around the world where you can get cheap homes and retire before you're 50, if thats what you want.
