DALLAS – Dallas police were in a standoff early Saturday with at least one gunman in an armored van that fled the scene of a bizarre attack on Dallas police headquarters with gunfire and planted explosives.

Police chased the vehicle to a restaurant parking lot in the community about Hutchins, where it was surrounded and "disabled, with a .50 caliber rifle, according to Dallas police.

Dallas police chief David Brown told reporters that a suspect— before cutting off negotiations — indicated that the incident involved a child custody issue.

Following the gun battle, the suspect led officers in a high-speed chase down Interstate 45, ending in the parking lot of a Jack in the Box in Hutchins, Brown said. The suspect and officers again exchanged gunfire, during which no officers were hit.

The Dallas SWAT team took over negotiations with the suspect, who identified himself as James Boulware. Brown said they have not confirmed if this is the suspect's identity.

"He said we took his child and we accused him of being a terrorist and that he is going to blow us up," Brown said. Police have not confirmed the suspect's motive.

Officials have found that a man named James Boulware has had previous interactions with the police involving family violence. Investigators are following up on those leads.

Brown noted that police officers around the country have been threatened in recent months, specifically referencing the December attacks that left two officers dead in New York City. But the Dallas police has not previously received threats, he said.

Doug Stanglin and Jessica Estepa reported from Washington, D.C.

What I've gather is that his kids were taken from him and he was accused of being a terrorist. Dude leaves explosive around the police station and gets into a shootout with the police. The audio of the gunfire tho :wow:

Dallas police found bags with explosives after a shootout involving multiple attackers at their headquarters early on Saturday morning. Officials were also locked in a standoff with at least one suspected gunmen who they believed was involved in the earlier attack.

Officials were investigating four suspicious bags that had been "spread out all over police headquarters," Police Chief David Brown told reporters. Nearby residents were being evacuated, he said.

One bag was found under a dumpster and another beneath a truck in the police headquarters parking lot, Dallas police tweeted. At least one device exploded when a specialized robot tried to move it, police said.

The apparent attack apparently targeting the police began when up to four suspects began shooting at the headquarters with automatic weapons at around 12:30 a.m. (1:30 a.m. ET), Brown told reporters.

"We saw multiple suspects firing guns at police headquarters," Brown said. "The suspects were parked in front."

Police returned fire and at least one suspect got into what witnesses say was an armored van, which rammed a patrol car and then raced off, he said. Officers gave chase and followed the van to the parking lot of a Jack In The Box in Hutchins, about 12 miles south of the city where they later "disabled" the van.

The suspect identified himself as James Boulware, although police had not confirmed his identity. He accused police of "taking his son," Brown said.

"A SWAT team has begun negotiations with the suspect," he said. "We're talking to him by cellphone and trying to find peaceful solution.

No police had been injured in the assault, he said. There could be up to four suspects who used automatic weapons, according to Brown.
