Police forces Wednesday morning responded to a shooting at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) that left two men dead.
Los Angeles Police Department police chief Charlie Beck described the incident as a murder and suicide. He said no suspects were at-large and the campus was now safe.
The shooting occurred in an office inside a UCLA engineering building, Beck said.
No other injuries were reported.
Students and faculty at the campus were told to shelter in place after the shooting was reported at Boelter Hall. “Shooting at Engineering 4. Go to secure location and deny entry (lockdown) now!” the university said in a message on Twitter shortly before 10:00 a.m. PT.
The shooting suspect has been described as a white male wearing a black jacket and black pants, according to the university’s newspaper, The Daily Bruin.
“Sources say suicide note was found near two people down,” Fox 11 News reporter Gigi Graciette tweeted. Sources also told NBC Los Angeles that police had found a handgun.
SWAT teams and agents from Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives responded to the incident.
Mehwish Khan, a UCLA student, told the Los Angeles Times that the “whole campus just started running and I started running too.”
“Everyone was very confused. We got in a building, and no one knew what was going on,” she said.
Another student told Reuters that police were yelling at people to flee.
“I was in Boelter Hall to take a final and I exit the staircase to see SWAT-looking police yelling at everyone to evacuate immediately,” Bahjat Alirani said.
The Los Angeles Police Department went on a “city-wide tactical alert” after the campus shooting.
