I never understood why height preferences bother some guys so much

It's insecurity and it gets old after a while for some people. Honestly if you're within a certain height range like 5'8 or 5'9 and up it seems like you can have plenty of women be fine with your height. I'm within that range barely so I don't sweat people who worry about height but I can understand why dudes who are below that mark get offended.

Some of them have been treated like jokes and the things that people say on the internet can affect someone's self esteem.

I don't think having a preference is the issue, it is the double standards. Women are allowed to have preferences but men are shamed for theirs.

Women want tall guys, no big deal. Men want slim women, it's fat shaming and an entire body positive moment is started to make fat women feel good.
