Secretariat owner Penny Chenery was respectful when asked to answer whether American Pharoah was an all-time great like her former incredible thoroughbred.
But her response: Nope.


Here's what she told Yahoo Sports before his run at the 2015 Belmont Stakes with a Triple Crown on the line:

"I would question that. Just on the basis of times. His races have not been particularly fast. All he has to do is beat the other horse, but when you compare him with other champions — of course the condition of the racetrack is a factor in a horse's winning time but still — four seconds is quite a big gap."

Yeah, Sham was a monster too and would have won the Triple that had it not been for that anomaly Secretariat.

The '78 triple between Alydar and Affirmed was crazy though. Nothing between them.
