I:ohhh:

It's fukking crazy. Roger Goodell killed the running back position. He turned QBs into Gods who have a hand in every play on the field, but cannot be touched. Additionally, the RBs who have been drafted in the top 5 recently of all been disappointing / busts:
Since 1980, there have been 25 running backs drafted in the top five selections. The most recent are Trent Richardson, Darren McFadden, Reggie Bush, Ronnie Brown, Cadillac Williams, and Cedric Benson.

IMO, if you got a kid with legit D1 / D2 talent and he playing RB, you are terrible father.

Let's ignore concussions for now, thats not my main issue.

You ball out for 2-3+ years.

Extension coming up. Thinking in OTAs, "I'm good for 1000+ yards every year:wow:Bout to get that real NFL money"

Team like ":usure:N1gga, if that 4th round RB we drafted puts up 80% of your production at 30% of the cost, than you gettin cut".

NFL cuttin n1ggaz 1 year into a contract to play a 5th round RB. Than the cycle repeats.

Let's face FACTS.

DeMarco Murray, the #1 RB last year on the most popular franchise in America, will not get more than $6 mil a year for 4 years. He might not even see the halfway point of his contract before he gets cut.

Let's read testimony.
At OvertheCap.com, you'll see only 11 running backs with an APY over $5 million, including Richardson and his rookie contract that's fully-guaranteed because he was a first round pick. Other than Richardson, only three players have received a $20 million+ guarantee. Peterson's total value is almost double what LeSean McCoy got from the Philadelphia Eagles, and that's the second-biggest contract at the position.

There are 25 cornerbacks making at least $5 million APY. Even though only two CBs have a $20 million guarantee, a young player, parent, or agent must ask themselves if they'd rather be in the group where 11 players are getting a >$5 million APY, or where 25 players are. If running backs do get more guaranteed, it's only because their agents know how often they get injured and how unlikely it is that they'll get a big second contract.

So what are the cons of being a running back right now?

- Higher chance of injury

- More work (and more hits taken) on game day

- Less pay

- Lower draft value

- Likelier to be replaced with a low-round pick

- Fewer touches in a passing league

- Less respect

- You ruined my fantasy team!

Pros of being a running back

- Maybe there's the one-in-500 chance you're Marshawn Lynch or Adrian Peterson

- But you're not.

Rather than draft a great running back and then hope he can perform behind a mediocre offensive line, teams are increasing their investment in offensive lineman and putting "just about anyone" back there, hoping for the same results. Last year we saw three tackles go in the top four, and then two guards(!) go in the top 10. The Chargers then took tackle D.J. Fluker with the 11th pick, while the Giants, Bears, and Cowboys also picked up offensive lineman soon after.

you already have a few examples: UW's Shaq Thompson, who really was a defensive prospect the whole time sticking with LB

and Myles Jack, who plays a lot of RB in college but will also likely enter the draft in '16 as an OLB

Ben Tate said he should have stuck with safety, 5 years into his NFL career this season :damn:

baseball is THE answer if all you want out of being an athlete is to make as much money as possible

It depends.

The average NBA player makes more than the average MLB player. However MLB stars make more than NBA stars. MLB stars are caking up but if you're not a star then :ld:

most elite players have a position on both sides of the ball (HS) so it really doesn't matter, they gonna go wherever the college coaches see them as a better fit.

nah these kids can usually choose, and they better pick defensive back :yeshrug:

Yeah, well you have to be incredibly good to get that $$ in baseball

This whole "Im forcing my kid to dedicate himself to play baseball with the hopes he will be an all time great" is stupid

Nah really. You really think them 3-star+ RBs are gonna really go from scoring TDs and juking n1ggaz on every play to playing DB so willingly?

most of the time these running backs are just the best athletes on the team who are gona be given the ball most of the time, switching positions is the best for them once they reach the college level

I know a guy who was a top 5 rb in the nation in his class and was moved to CB his freshman year of college, Joe Haden I believe was a QB in high school and played DB at Florida. Sometimes they move you out of necessity or having a particular skillset.
