should I cup the mic or not?

I plan on performing at some lil shows and events n stuff here in the Orlando area and I was wondering, should I cup the mic? Is that something rappers really have to do? Cause to be honest I don't like doing it all, the feel of the mic just weird and it's hard to position it for me to speak into. I'd rather not do it but is it something that makes the sound better or something?

Don't do that, point the mic FORWARD and project through the mic...
Do not hold the microphone perpendicular to your face. Hold it parallel and about an inch away from your mouth, with your hand BELOW the metallic part.
