Most would say no but it really depends on the breed of dog and how old it is. I can tell you from experience its a HUGE responsibility and you should take it VERY seriously.

Its not so much if it will be cool with it. Its more about the quality of life. Animals each have their own individual personality and feelings believe it or not. I personally didn't believe until I had my own dog. To answer your question more directly, you can keep pretty much any animal in a cage for as long as you like, you just have to assess if the time is excessive. 12 hours in a small cage sounds excessive to me.

Remember a big dog has big $hits that you have to clean up, I don't know about you but I don't want to have two hand fulls of $hit.

like one the brehs said the first year is very critical you need to train it. My dog was only in the crate during the first month for long amounts of time. He's completely house trained and there's times where he's in the house 12 hours with no problem out the crate while where gone. It was a process though first year dude was testing my patience and at times I doubted my decision on getting him.
