You can go wrong. The market is at an all-time high. It all depends how quickly he'll want to access the money. If we're talking long-term, by all means, get in an index fund. If you want that money soon, you're taking a risk by investing in something like SPY.

long term a roth IRA would be good for him right now as well. i am in a somewhat similar situation to him and the time to get into a roth is when youre in a lower tax bracket

But really, there are some oil-based energy companies whose stocks are kind of low right now and could dip lower. They have possibilities of rising again in the future. Errbody needs crude oil.
