Why would it be legal here? The US is one of the most absurdly puritanical nations in the world.
But yes, criminalization doesn't stop it from happening. It just forces it deeper underground, making it sketchier and more risky for everyone involved.
We can't just ignore it or children and women will continue to be exploited. Have it taxed and regulated. Same with liquor. When was the last time you bought moonshine.
Legalization won't change anything for these poor people. They are just a pretext.
Keep it illegals: it will keep the demand in check;
Leniency on prostitutes (and "tolerate" them in some red districts): it will reduce the power criminal networks have on them;
Fight organized crime responsible for human trafficking.
