Tipping is necessary in America because.......capitalism. When you pay your staff $2.13 an hour you leave it up to the customer to pay the rest. This creates an acrimonious relationship between staff and customer, while as normal, the real culprit is in the background counting the money. See, if people were really against the system of tipping itself and not just too broke or cheap to tip, then they would not eat at establishments where tipping is the norm. Whether you tip your server or not, you're still contributing the continued success and operation of the business, thus ensuring the survival of the system. You're punishing the worker yet rewarding the business that is operating the system that you are at odds with.

Now, we could send tipping the way of the dinosaur. But remember, this is America; the cost of labor is passed on to you, the consumer, whether that be in terms of cost, or, intangibles like quality and service. If you raise the wage of a server from $2.13/hr to $10/hr (these would be in the most basic establishments; some places the servers already make well above minimum wage in addition to tips), a number of staff would of course get laid off because that's how we do things here, then the price of food would go up to cover the new labor costs + an extra few percentage points for extra profit (businessman gotta have a life too :troll:). So you'd have less staff with means potentially lower service and service quality and higher food costs. Some of you would lose your favorite spots because they'd just shut down. Bringing server hourly wages up to even minimum wage level would be a huge labor cost to absorb. The whole industry would have to change.

Fortunately, for cheapskates, there are still a number of people out there who do tip and we pretty much subsidize the cheap service economy an increasingly lazy country is becoming more dependent upon. In conclusion, you're welcome.

If the service is good, you should tip. "Real nikkas" tip amounts vary by the service given, though...
Why should he pay somebody who’s already being paid? :yeshrug: Why not ask the server’s millionaire boss to give him a “tip” by raising his wages? :manny: If you don’t like getting paid $4 a hour, work somewhere else...McDonald’s pay $8 a hour so instantly they can double their wages...

20% off top... usually

15% if the service was bad

25% if the service was good or I'm too drunk

That's what any civilized person should do

And y'all wonder why we get bad or slow service. Cause nikkas like y'all don't tip
