Everybody saying Sloan, but why not Nellie? Multiple players have gone on record saying that while he was cool AF, he would dial it in sometimes. After the Warriors beat the Mavs in that series, he stopped caring because that was his championship lol
He would be next to go but I think he’s more creative than Sloan

I'd dump Nelson and Sloan. Not sure how they on that list over KC Jones.

Also, Carlisle didn't make the top 15 list which had Doc Rivers.

edit: it wasn't a top ten list. It was top 15:

dump out Rivers for Carlisle, imo.

He’s better than Spo too

Yea you crazy. Spo might have a top 3 resume of All Time. Won with stars and with bums. Did it with treadmill teams and injured stars. No one outside Don Nelson and Larry Brown can even argue they've taken so many random rosters far into the playoffs multiple times.

I think he’s a very good coach and better than several on the list…

I think he’s a better coach than Sloan, Rivers, Nelson, Spolestra, and Kerr for sure.

There a couple others on that list he might be better than as well.

It’s harder to judge certain guys from different eras.

I guess the problem with this is, how much is it to do with what Pat created? It's not like Spo came in and started his own thing, he came in and continued something that was already established. And it must be taken into account that making the playoffs in the East is a considerably easier task than making it in the West.

He came into the league as a HC with a silver spoon in his mouth.

All those players that the Heat scouted/developed across his tenure have had very little to do with him.

I call BS on that because it was that easy to scout and develop players, then how come more teams aren't doing it?

Coaching plays a major part in maximizing the guys on the roster skillset that they have and he's damn good at it.

Because of this -
This is hilariously untrue.

But it’s par for the course that is Gil’s contrarianism.

Pat created that ethos; the Heat culture is basically who Pat is as a person. This is going all the way back to the 70s when Bill Sharman told Pat that the only way he was going to exist on that Lakers squad was to be the best conditioned player. He’s basically lived by that set of beliefs ever since.

All the infamous conditioning tests, body fat standards and the stringent training methods are all the psyche of Pat.

When he first arrived in Miami, he had had long fine-tuned his ability as a head coach, whilst Spo was only a video coordinator.

It's patently ridiculous for anyone to say otherwise, especially since Pat saved Spo from the wrath of Bron, where he could've easily been let go and would've been lucky to get another head coaching role elsewhere, and nobody would be speaking about Spo like they do now (to which he's become overrated).
None of that is because of Spo.

Pat worked that into the fabric of all the coaching personnel (trainers, scouts, development cadre etc) over the years. Teams don't have someone that maniacal and driven to establish something like that (let alone keep it going). Head coaches aren't scouting and developing players like that, sure, they have some part in it, but it's largely an inconsequential one.

What the Heat have acheived over the last 15+ years has been something much bigger than Spo. It extends way past him. That doesn't mean to say he isn't a good coach, but it's hard to judge exactly how much of that is his own doing and what is everything else around him.

So you’re essentially saying that coaching doesn’t matter and they can fill anyone in that spot and have the same success?

I'm saying it's hard to distinguish how much of what the Heat have acheived over Spo's tenure as HC, is due to him, and the platform that he has benefited from.

I certainly wouldn't be putting him in GOAT talks because of that.

I do believe that Pat could've created another Spo far more easily than Spo starting off somewhere else and having the same success. And that's less of an indictment on Spo, because he wouldn't have been able to shine and develop as a coach anywhere else the same.
