Because the alternative is losing him for nothing and still being over the cap, they would be better served keeping Ibaka and trying to flip Demar + Jonas to clear salary. Ibaka has been the one Raptor that has showed up throughout the playoffs, you wont be able to replace him on the FA market and you don't have the young player in the wings to take up his spot either.
If you had a young PF waiting to take over for him it would be different, but letting Ibaka leave is basically the start of a full rebuild which doesn't seem to be the move for them.
Its not a rebuild if they re sign Lowry and keep Demar.
letting Ibaka walk on his own doesnt signify anything.
If they re-sign Lowry they have to re-sign Ibaka, if your goal is a full rebuild then letting those two go is the start of it. I don't think you can let Ibaka walk if you're not rebuilding...
You can re tool without rebuilding tho....I dont get this connection between the two moves.
They could re sign KL,let Ibaka walk,move Demar and flip jonas for Drummond.

That would be a rebuild, you'd be starting Lowry, Powell, ------, Patterson & Drummond.
What you get for Demar would be a signifigant piece tho...lets say Demar and something for Buckets.

Patterson isn't a starter and is a huge drop off from Ibaka, I mean if you're gonna trade for Butler I don't see why you wouldn't keep Ibaka in that case.

Im sure masai would make another move but my point was you can re tool and dont have to tear it completely down and still be a 4-5 seed.
Last year this team started Luis Scola at PF and won 56 games.
Thats pretty much the dumbest thing they could do. At least the current team gives the city something to cheer for. Fact is no one in the east is doing anything until Lebron declines. Its the NBA, whoever has the best player wins and the rest are just fighting for scraps.
